January
- January 8 - 57-year-old house painter Doss Wyley dies in a fire when his house trailer in Burke burns.[1]
February
- February 8 – 49-year-old Elizabeth V. Nutter is found guilty of second-degree murder by Judge Paul E. Brown for shooting her husband Dale in the back of the head while he slept in their home at 516 Waterway Drive in Lake Barcroft on June 25, 1959.[2]
- February 11– 36-year-old Navy test pilot Lieutenant Commander Charles E. W. Dobbs is killed when he falls down a flight of three stairs and hits his head on a door stop at his home at 5013 Bristow Drive in Annandale. Commander Dobbs is pronounced dead on arrival at the DeWitt Army hospital on Fort Belvoir.[3]
March
- March 11 – 49-year-old Elizabeth V. Nutter is sentenced to 10 years of probation by Judge Paul E. Brown for the June 25, 1959, murder of her husband Dale. Judge Brown says that she will "suffer far more from the act that she committed" than she would from being imprisoned.[4]
- March 31 – The Fairfax County Park Authority is awarded a 25-year license to operate the Fort Belvoir Reservoir and the surrounding property as a public park.[5] This 242-acre property will become the core of Lake Accotink Park.
April
- April 2 – Two-month-old Rolanda Denney is smothered to death in the wood stove of her mother's second-floor apartment at 5929 Oak Street in Baileys Crossroads while her mother Virginia is out visiting. Virginia discovers her daughter's burned corpse in the smoldering stove when she returns home.[6][7]
- April 21 – 12-year-old Charles W. Kidwell is struck and killed by an automobile as he walks along a rural road in Chantilly.[8]
May
- May 8 – 29-year-old Dorothy E. Tates and her mother, 58-year-old Agnes M. Cole are fatally injured in a car crash on Route 29-211 near Centreville. Tates becomes the county's 14th traffic fatality the following day when she dies at Arlington Hospital. Cole suffers a broken leg, which causes blood clots that break free and travel to her heart and lungs and dies on June 6.[9][10][11]
- May 22 – 39-year-old Alexander Shepherd, Jr. becomes the county's 16th traffic fatality of the year when he loses control of the panel truck he is driving and is thrown from the vehicle, which then lands on top of him, on University Drive near Bucknell Elementary School in the Alexandria area of the county.[12][13]
- May 26 – Mount Vernon District Supervisor George C. Landrith announces his resignation from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, effective June 8.[14]
June
- June 7 – 7-year-old Gerry Mace is fatally injured when he rides his bicycle into the side of a moving truck in Falls Church. Mace is taken to Arlington Hospital, where he is pronounced dead.[15]
- June 7 – 68-year-old Frank J. Bradley commits suicide behind his home on Camp Alger Avenue in Falls Church by shooting himself with a .38 caliber pistol.[16]
- June 27 – The Falls Church City Council formally opens annexation proceedings against Fairfax County by adopting in a 5-1 vote an ordinance seeking to add 4.54 square miles of the county to the city's territory.[17]
July
- July 4 – 29-year-old Crawford Bass fatally injures 82-year-old Mary E. Keith when he runs a stop sign at the intersection of Fort Hunt and Collingwood Roads in Alexandria and strikes the car she is riding in. Keith dies about two hours later in the Alexandria Hospital from her injuries.[18][19][20]
September
- September 28 – 27-month-old Terri L. Quick drowns in a water-filled gravel pit of the Modern Sand and Gravel Company near her home on Telegraph Road in Franconia.[21][22]
- September 28 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors endorses a proposal for a merger between the county and the City of Falls Church.[23]
October
- October 20 – The Springfield Plaza shopping center opens in Springfield.[24]
November
- November 26 – The Saint Michael Catholic Church is dedicated in Annandale.
