January
- January 13 – 18-year-old Stephanie D. Johnson is struck and killed as she attempts to cross Lee Highway near its intersection with Village Drive in Fairfax. Johnson is take to Fairfax Hospital, where she is pronounced dead.[1]
March
- March 8 – 18-year-old Clydel D. Diggs pleads guilty to murdering 48-year-old David Thomas, Jr. at Thomas' apartment in Mount Vernon on October 28, 1982.[2]
April
- April 3 – Leonard J. Fleeger kills his wife, Mary S. Fleeger, and three children, Brian, Kimberly, and Susan, in their home at 3804 Lakeview Terrace in the Lake Barcroft neighborhood of Falls Church before committing suicide.[3]
May
- May 12 – Following his arrest for public drunkenness, 37-year-old John R. Thompson is found unconscious on the floor of his cell in the Fairfax Jail. He is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he dies early the next day.[4]
- May 13 – Judge Lewis H. Griffith sentences 18-year-old Clydel D. Diggs to 50 years in prison for the murder of 48-year-old David Thomas, Jr. in Mount Vernon on October 28, 1982.[5]
- May 13 – 16-year-old John Svec is struck and mortally injured by drunken Navy nurse Mary Ann Cronin as he walks along Little River Turnpike in Annandale. Svec dies at Fairfax Hospital on May 16.[6][7]
- May 14 – 59-year-old electrician Burton A. Zarin is fatally burned in a fire at the Burlington Coat Factory at 3524 S. Jefferson Street in Bailey's Crossroads. Zarin and another injured worker are taken to the Washington Hospital Center, where he dies on June 2.[8][9]
June
- June 1 – 23-year-old Thomas S. Jenkins pleads guilty to second-degree murder for killing his 3½-month-old nephew Jonathan O. Dyer by throwing the baby into a ceiling light fixture while high on PCP at the Dyer family home in Annandale on November 20, 1982.[10]
- June 13 – 28-year-old Keith Hunter is ambushed and fatally stabbed by several other prisoners in a television room in Cell block No. 6 at the Lorton Reformatory.[11]
- June 23 – 16-year-old Peter K. Dickinson is killed by an Amtrak train which strikes him on the Accotink Creek Railroad Bridge in Springfield.[12]
July
- July 1 – Fairfax Circuit Court Judge Barnard F. Jennings sentences 23-year-old Thomas S. Jenkins to 20 years in prison for killing his 3½-month-old nephew Jonathan O. Dyer by throwing the baby into a ceiling light fixture while high on PCP at the Dyer family home in Annandale on November 20, 1982.[13]
- July 15 – 33-year-old Raymond T. Ball fatally shoots 33-year-old Leon F. Moore and wounds his 22-year-old girlfriend Leslie McCain at her rented house at 4104 Hummer Road in Annandale. Ball, who is also shot, staggers to a nearby 7-Eleven seeking help.[14][15][16]
August
- August 16 – 17-year-old Julie Rubin commits suicide by standing on the westbound lanes of Interstate 66 near the Nutley Street exit and allowing a truck to hit her.[17]
September
- September 2 – Vienna Town Manager Brackenridge H. Bentley fires long-time police chief Vernon L. Jones.[18]
- September 16 – Governor Charles S. Robb appoints Alexandria attorney Jack B. Stevens to replace the retiring Judge Burch Millsap on the bench of the Fairfax Circuit Court.[19]
October
- October 16 – 52-year-old Paul L. Grier, Sr. is found shot to death in his apartment at 3507 S. George Mason Drive in Alexandria.[20]
November
- November 4 – The students in charge of George Mason University's annual student film series are forced to cancel a midnight screening of the pornographic movie "Debbie Does Dallas" and voluntarily surrender the film to the Fairfax County Police Department after the FCPD obtains a warrant allowing them to seize the film as obscene.[21]
- November 9 – 46-year-old Malinda R. Williams is fatally injured in a traffic crash on Route 28 south of Centreville. Williams is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where she dies later that day.[22]
December
- December 24 – 32-year-old John P. McGlothlin grinchily murders his ex-wife Patricia as she visits with their 4-year-old son at his mother Ruby's home at 9302 Kittery Court in Fairfax.[23][24]
