January
- January 11 – 51-year-old police snitch Brent U. Shorter is fatally shot by a Fairfax County Police officer behind a restaurant in the Rose Hill Shopping Center in the Franconia area of Alexandria when he refuses repeated commands to drop the knife he is waving around. Shorter is taken to the Inova HealthPlex, where he is pronounced dead.[1][2]
- January 12 – An early morning fire in apartment 211 at the Cavalier Club Apartments at 6200 Wilson Boulevard in Falls Church fatally burns 39-year-old Mark C. Williams. Williams is taken to Washington Burn Center, where he dies the following day.[3][4]
- January 13 – 37-year-old Santos Bonifacio Gomez-Lopez is struck by the driver of a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta in the 7000 block of Little River Turnpike, who stops and calls police. Two more cars then run over Gomez-Lopez, but neither one stops. Gomez-Lopez is taken to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he dies of his injuries on January 22.[5]
- January 26 – 35-year-old Odis M. Reyes Lazo is found shot to death in his home at 5904 Otley Drive in the Huntington area of Alexandria.[6]
- January 26 – The new City of Fairfax Regional Library opens.[7]
February
- February 11 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors adopts a green building policy, requiring that all newly-constructed and renovated county buildings achieve at least Silver-level LEED certification.[8]
- February 12 – 33-year-old Ashley McIntosh is mortally injured in Hybla Valley when her 2003 Toyota Corolla is broadsided by Fairfax County Police Officer Amanda R. Perry, who is responding to a report of a fight.[9] In violation of department policy, Officer Perry was not using her cruiser's siren en route to the call.[10]
- February 14 – The AMC Springfield Mall 10 movie theaters close.
March
- March 3 – 60-year-old Ronald K. Giguere is shot to death by his wife, Marysusan Giguere, to settle an argument in their home at 1438 Crowell Road in Vienna.[11][12]
- March 5 – 19-year-old narcotics enthusiast Alicia Lannes unintentionally kills herself with an overdose of heroin at her parent's house in Centreville.[13][14]
- March 13 – 42-year-old John P. Bloxham is convicted of first-degree murder for fatally shooting 31-year-old Todd J. Rogers in Rogers' truck in the Beacon Hill area of Alexandria on June 30, 2007.[15]
April
- April 3 – 17-year-old Elvin Rodriguez-Juarez strangles his stepmother, 42-year-old Zaida Alvarez Rodriguez, in their apartment at 12056 Greywing Square in Reston.[16]
- April 6 – 29-year-old Moises Chirinos-Lopez is stabbed to death in Lincolnia by 35-year-old Edis Aldolfo Reyes to settle an argument.[17]
- April 10 – 46-year-old Robert Persigehl shoots and kills his former girlfriend, 48-year-old Alexandria woman Vanessa Miller, then commits suicide in her home at 5621 Overly Drive in Rose Hill.[18]
- April 22 – Fairfax County Police Sergeant Weiss Rasool is sentenced to two years probation for misusing police databases by searching for the license plates of three vehicles which were being used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to follow a terrorism suspect and providing that information.[19]
- April 27 – 18-year-old Harbi Adam is stabbed to death by 21-year-old Joshua S. Puryear during a fight between two groups of people in Falls Church.[20][21]
May
- May 2 – Fairfax County Police Officer Amanda R. Perry is charged with reckless driving in connection with the February 12 crash that killed 33-year-old Ashley McIntosh in Alexandria.[22]
- May 2 – 27-year-old MS-13 member Brian O. Sanchez Maradiaga is sentenced to two life terms in prison for robbing and beating 22-year-old Fredy Reyes-Castillo to death in Brown's Chapel Park in Reston on June 17, 2001.[23]
- May 5 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approves the Clark Construction Group's proposal to build a new 46,000 square foot library and a senior and workforce housing development, Lee Village at Silver Lake, on a 6.64-acre parcel of county-owned land at the intersection of Silver Lake Boulevard and Beulah Street in Alexandria.[24][25]
- May 6 – A magnitude 1.8 earthquake occurs in Annandale.[26]
- May 10 – 49-year-old Michael A. Ross is shot to death in an apartment in the Penn Daw neighborhood of Alexandria.[27]
- May 16 – Judge Stanley P. Klein sentences 23-year-old Ahmed I. Osman to 73 years in prison for the robbery and murder of 46-year-old cab driver Parvez Ahmed in Falls Church on June 11, 2006.[28][29]
- May 19 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors confirms the Park Authority Board's selection of John W. Dargle, Jr. as director of the Authority.[30]
- May 23 – Alfredo R. Prieto is given two death sentences by Judge Randy I. Bellows for the murders of Warren H. Fulton, III and Rachael A. Raver in Reston on December 4, 1988.[31]
June
- June 2 – 47-year-old Sang Byung Kim pleads no contest to second degree murder for stabbing his 43-year-old wife Hae Ja Lee to death in the kitchen of their home at 13651 Sweet Woodruff Lane in Centreville on July 4, 2007.[32]
- June 6 – Penney S. Azcarate is invested as a judge on the Fairfax County General District Court.[33]
- June 7 – 23-year-old Faridullah Abbasi is shot to death in his driveway at 8094 Paper Birch Drive in Lorton.[34]
- June 13 – 86-year-old Vienna resident Virginia C. Casey dies in a fire at her home at 308 Plum Street, SW.[35]
- June 16 – John W. Dargle, Jr. takes over as director of the Fairfax County Park Authority.[30]
- June 17 – 52-year-old Larry T. Johnson dies in a kitchen fire at 2764 Annandale Road in Falls Church.[36]
- June 28 – The Burke Centre Library opens.[37]
July
- July 5 – 54-year-old David M. Przewlocki is shot to death by officers of the Fairfax County Police Department in Oakton.[38]
- July 26 – 18-year-old Centreville High School student Rayoung Kim is mortally injured at her home at 14546 Old Mill Road in Centreville during a kut, a Korean ritual similar to an exorcism. Kim is taken to first to Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, then moved Inova Fairfax Hospital where she dies of her injuries on July 30.[39][40][41]
August
- August 8 – 15-year-old Cameron Dudley is killed in Centreville when the 1998 BMW he is riding in crashes into a tree and catches fire.[42][43]
- August 9 – 26-year-old Ryan A. Hoffa is killed when he loses control of his motorcycle and strikes a tree in Falls Church.[44]
September
- September 13 – Barbara J. Bosworth is kidnapped by Keith Baskerville and Lutchman Chandler, two men from Woodbridge, from a parking garage at the Springfield Mall in Springfield. The two men drive Bosworth to Woodbridge, where she and Chandler are killed when the car crashes.[45]
- September 18 – The 1st Stage Theater opens in McLean.
October
- October 11 – 31-year-old James R. Hammer unintentionally kills himself in an early morning crash in Reston when he loses control of his 2004 Nissan Maxima on Sunrise Valley Drive and strikes a tree, causing the car to flip.[46]
November
- November 2 – 49-year-old cab driver Mazhar Nazir is shot to death by thrill killer Evan Gargiulo in Tysons Corner.[47][48]
- November 12 – 66-year-old Richard L. Whitenton is killed when his 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle strikes a 2004 Nissan minivan driven by a 38-year-old woman who had run the red light at the intersection of Legato Road and Lee Highway in Fairfax. Whitenton is airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he is pronounced dead.[49]
- November 15 – 43-year-old Morton Fuchs is shot to death by James Becker in the Rose Hill neighborhood of Alexandria to settle an argument.[50]
- November 16 – 22-year-old Erika Yancey is stabbed to death outside her apartment at 2320 Dulles Station Boulevard in Herndon by Marcus Williams.[51]
- November 19 – Brothers Terence and Ryan Strope and their friend, Andres Yelicie, are stabbed and mortally wounded during a home invasion robbery at their Springfield home by Jelani Slay and Delante T. Cook, who masquerade as police officers to attempt to force compliance from their victims.[52][53] The three men are taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where they die shortly thereafter.[52]
- November 27 – 56-year-old Frank J. Hubert is found frozen to death near the Engleside Plaza shopping center at 8646 Richmond Highway in Alexandria.[54]
December
- December 9 – 81-year-old Thomas K. Appleberry, Sr., fatally shoots his 81-year-old wife, Rachel, and 53-year-old son Thomas, Jr. before committing suicide in the family home at 9622 Cinnamon Creek Drive in Vienna.[55]
- December 10 – The BB&T bank at 6220 Old Dominion Drive in McLean is robbed. Fairfax County Police chase the suspect, 19-year-old Hailu Brook, into Arlington County, where they fatally shoot him.[56]
Crime
There were 22 murders or other homicides in Fairfax County in 2008.[57]
