Eric A. Barcia

Eric A. Barcia (January 29, 1975 – July 12, 1997) was a 22-year-old Reston man who died on July 12, 1997, as a result of his attempt to bungee jump off the Accotink Creek Railroad Bridge in Springfield using a home-made bungee cord.[1]

Darwin Award

His unfortunate manner of death was later the subject of the 1997 Darwin Awards, which noted as part of its "Runner-Up" award a statement given by Fairfax County Police spokesman Warren Carmichael that "The stretched length of the cord that he had assembled was greater than the distance between the trestle and the ground."[1]
