- January 7 – 30-year-old Loan P. Nguyen and her 22-month-old daughter Ashley N. Ton are murdered by Dinh N. Pham following a botched burglary attempt at the family home at 2877 Lester Lee Court in Falls Church.[1][2]
- January 26 – Lieutenant Colonel Suzanne G. Devlin is named acting Chief of Police by County Executive Anthony H. Griffin, replacing J. Thomas Manger.[3]
