- May 4 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approves a proposal by supervisor C. B. Runyon to put a paid firefighter in each of the county's 11 volunteer departments, and to establish a central control and dispatch system.[1]
- May 9 – A 3400-pound pipe slips from the crane lifting it, crushing Charles Jones to death in Franconia.[2]
