January
- January 15 – Virginia State Trooper Alexander M. Cochran, III and Army Sergeant Dennis R. Kief are murdered by Larry L. Gill in Lorton.[1]
- January 16 – 5-year-old Jedidiah Law burns to death in a fire at the family's home at 9924 Oak Creek Court in Oakton. Both Jedidiah's father William and Fairfax County firefighter Konrad Kurtz attempt to rescue the child, but are driven back by the smoke and intense heat of the blaze.[2]
February
- February 22 – 24-year-old Robert E. Darby is fatally stabbed outside the dining hall of Youth Center I at the Lorton Reformatory.[3]
- February 25 – A new 300-bed wing of the Fairfax County Jail is dedicated.[4]
March
- March 18 – The law firms of Hazel, Beckhorn and Hanes of Fairfax and Thomas and Fiske of Alexandria announce their intention to merge.[5]
April
- April 24 – 32-year-old Yin Ling Lo Wong is shot to death during a botched robbery at her home at 703 Archer Court in Herndon.[6][7]
May
- May 19 – 71-year-old Alice B. Sheldon fatally shoots her bedridden 84-year-old husband Ting, then calls her attorney to inform him before committing suicide in their home at 6037 Ramshorn Place in McLean.[8]
- May 30 – Carla J. Porritt smothers her two-month-old son William in her Fairfax apartment. The death is considered a case of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome until 1990, when Porritt is charged with murder.[9][10]
June
- June 6 – The Fair Oaks Hospital opens.[11] A 37-year-old Chantilly man with a severe case of the shits becomes the first patient admitted.[12]
- June 11 – While operating a bulldozer, 37-year-old Keith Carpenter, a worker for F. E. Gregory and Sons, unintentionally punctures a buried 32-inch diameter gasoline pipeline, sending a 100 foot high geyser of super unleaded gasoline gushing out of the four-inch hole in the Singleton's Grove neighborhood of Centreville. Thousands of gallons of gasoline flood the area, in places 4 to 6 inches deep, forcing the evacuation of 300 homes in both the Singleton's Grove and the Sunset Ridge neighborhoods, as well as 700 students of nearby Union Mill Elementary School and the 150 construction workers on the site. Nearly 400 firefighters as well as other emergency personnel respond to the scene to effect the cleanup.[13]
- June 17 – 17-year-old Fairfax High School student Chong Hwan Pak drowns in Burke Lake while swimming between several boats.[14]
- June 20 – To help spread book learnin' to the po' hicks of the area, the Pohick Regional Library opens in Burke.
July
- July 6 – 41-year-old Richard L. Whitley rides the lightning for the July 25, 1980 murder of Phoebe Parsons in her home in the Pimmit Hills neighborhood of Falls Church.[15]
- July 9 – 32-year-old Larry L. Gill is found guilty of second-degree murder for shooting Virginia State Trooper Alexander M. Cochran, III and Army Sergeant Dennis R. Kief in Lorton on January 15.[16]
- July 12 – 10-year-old Bouloy Khambay drowns in the Holmes Run in Annandale.[17]
- July 25 – 17-year-old Michelle Turner is fatally injured in Reston when the car she is riding in flips on Fox Mill Road near Pinecrest Road. Turner is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where she dies of massive head injuries.[18]
- July 25 – 17-year-old Peter Lisenby unintentionally kills himself when he loses control of his 1978 Volkswagen and crashes into a tree on Old Courthouse Road near Creek Crossing Road in Vienna. Lisenby is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he dies.[18][19]
August
- August 3 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors votes 8-1 to accept a scheme to build the Fairfax County Government Center, with only Supervisor Audrey Moore dissenting.[20]
- August 7 – Fairfax County Police Officer Gary Riccio is fired from the department for making obscene telephone calls.[21]
- August 24 – 17-year-old Derek C. Forbes is shot and mortally wounded by 18-year-old Brian D. Loving in Loving's house at 14483 Golden Oak Road in Centreville. Forbes is flown to Fairfax Hospital, where he dies early the next morning.[22]
September
- September 8 – The nude, beaten corpse of 37-year-old Eige Sober-Adler is discovered near the construction site of a Days Inn at 2200 Centreville Road in Herndon.[23][24]
- September 29 – Roger W. Whitney is paroled after serving 16 years of a double-life sentence for the July, 1971 murders of Lieutenant Commander William F. Rolland, Sr. and his 19-year-old son Bud.[25]
October
- October 12 – Jermaine James and Amanda L. Croson, both six years old, die in a fire in a third floor unit at 11633 Stoneview Square in the Shadowood Condominiums in Reston.[26]
- October 17 – The Fairfax Station Railroad Museum, housed in a replica of the original station, is dedicated in Fairfax Station.
November
- November 6 – The body of 19-year-old Amalia Zappas-Green is found beneath a tree in the Bull Run Marina Regional Park in Clifton by a passerby.[27][28]
- November 13 – 27-year-old Kristen L. Restivo dies in a fire when her 1981 Chevrolet Caprice catches fire in the 7800 block of Rolling Road in Springfield.[29][30]
- November 16 – While making a controlled buy of narcotics in a parking lot behind the One Price Cleaners at 5834 Columbia Pike in Baileys Crossroads, Fairfax County Police officer Irene M. Boyle fatally shoots 27-year-old unarmed recreational pharmaceutical salesman Jose Carlos Rodriguez in the head when he surprises her. Rodriguez is taken to Alexandria Hospital, where he dies.[31][32]
December
- December 4 – 19-year-old Brian D. Loving is convicted of voluntary manslaughter for shooting Derek C. Forbes in Centreville on August 24.[33]
- December 8 – 41-year-old Clement A. Bain jumps from his 15th floor apartment at 5840 Cameron Run in Alexandria instead of being sentenced following his recent conviction on child pornography charges.[34]
- December 23 – 32-year-old Rose Beale is stabbed to death with a butcher knife by her former boyfriend, Larry L. Sharp, in her Reston apartment. Beale was murdered about ten minutes after two officers of the Fairfax County Police Department, who had been called to the scene by Beale's sister Paulette Carter because of a violent argument between Beale and Sharp, left.[35][36]
