- February 25 – The Fairfax High School opens for classes.[1]
June
August
- August 6 – 58-year-old George A. Yakel is shot to death with a .32 caliber pistol by his wife, 24-year-old Nancy Lee Yakel, in the Belle Haven area of Alexandria.[3][4]
September
- September 17 – Claude Bailey is shot and mortally wounded by guard Wick Clagett as he attempts to escape from the Lorton Reformatory. Bailey is taken to Gallinger Hospital in Washington, D.C., and later dies.[5][6]
December
- December 28 - Abner C. Ritchie is named judge of the Trial Justice Court by Circuit Court Judge Walter T. McCarthy, who also names Robert J. McCandlish, Jr. as associate trial justice.[7]
