January
- January 11 - 18-year-old Elizabeth Breeden is killed and 6 others are injured when the Tennessean passenger train derails in Burke.[2]
July
- July 6 – 29-year-old Norman L. Plank is shot to death in the basement of his sister Nellie L. Burrer's house at 4108 Forest Lane in the Chesterbrook Woods neighborhood of McLean.[3][4] Although originally ruled a suicide by Fairfax County Coroner Nelson Podolnick, the discovery that Burrer's 1940 automobile, as well as a suit of her 19-year-old son's clothes and Plank's checkbook and the money from his wallet had been stolen caused police to realize the scene had been staged.[3][5]
September
- September 11 – Fairfax County Police Chief Carl McIntosh announces the promotion of Sergeant Cecil Brown to detective sergeant and Lewis H. Shumate to sergeant to replace Brown.[6]
