Events that took place in Fairfax County in 1948:
January
- January 14 – 74-year-old Fred Corum is struck and killed by a car driven by 24-year-old Luther B. Stanley on Route 28 near Centreville.[1]
February
- February 3 – Fairfax County Police Lieutenant Henry T. Magarity is promoted to the newly-created rank of inspector, while Detective Sergeant Grafton L. Wells is promoted to lieutenant and given command of the department's detective bureau.[2]
- February 27 – 65-year-old J. C. Bare is killed and 48-year-old Clate H. Baldwin is fatally injured by a pickup truck driven by 34-year-old Cecil I. Davy as he walks along Route 211 west of Fairfax. Davy is arrested the following day at the farm near Centreville where he works by Fairfax County Police Sergeant Richard F. Utz and Private Julian Burke and taken to the Fairfax Jail. Baldwin dies in the Arlington Hospital late on March 1.[3][4]
March
- Several test wells are dug at the site of Edward Carr's proposed Springfield development, but fail to find sufficient ground water to support the planned population of 25,000.[5]
May
- May 14 – Fairfax Circuit Court Judge Paul E. Brown appoints Robert R. Dye to the Centreville District seat on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to serve the unexpired term of Daniel W. Buckley, who himself expired May 9.[6][7]
July
- July 11 – Three men, 35-year-old Henry Johnson, 29-year-old Benjamin H. Turner, and 18-year-old Raymond Nash escape from the Fairfax Jail after tampering with the lock on their cell door. All three men are recaptured by 7:45 p.m.[8][9]
August
- August 4 – Fairfax County Circuit Court Judge Paul E. Brown issues an order declaring that the town of Falls Church will become a second-class city on August 16.[10]
- August 12 – 3-year-old Kay Sowers is burned and mortally injured in a fire on her parents' farm in Herndon. The injured child is taken to Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C., where she dies the following evening.[11]
- August 16 – Falls Church becomes a second-class city.[10]
November
- November 11 – 3-year-old Linda E. Titcombe is killed when she falls out of a truck driven by her grandfather Aubrey Dailey near his store in Forestville.[12]
- November 14 – After liberating a truck from his employer, Floris dairy farmer Carter Magill, 29-year-old James R. Fincham kills 19-year-old Robert L. Wells when Wells crashes his motorcycle on Lee Highway near Centreville.[13][14] Fincham flees the scene and is arrested on November 21 near Front Royal, Virginia.[15]
- November 25 – 4-year-old Mary M. Proctor is mortally injured when she falls out of a second-floor window of her family's house at 212 N. Cherry street in Falls Church. She dies two days later at the Arlington Hospital.[16][17]
