Events that took place in Fairfax County in August, 1972:
- August 1 – The science lab at Thoreau Intermediate School is firebombed, causing $100,000 worth of damage.[1]
- August 21 – 29-year-old Joseph J. Brooks is fatally stabbed in his dormitory at the Lorton Reformatory. Brooks manages to stagger to the prison hospital and is taken to D.C. General Hospital, where he dies about 4½ hours later.[2]
