Henry David Thoreau Middle School is a public middle school in Vienna.

Carter N. Thorpe was named principal of the new school in March, 1960.[1][2]

Early on the morning of August 1, 1972, the science lab at Thoreau was firebombed, causing $100,000 worth of damage.[3]

At the May 9, 1985 meeting of the Fairfax County School Board, the board voted to rename the library after Principal Thorpe, who retired later that month after 25 years at Thoreau.[4]

In 1988, Bruce Oliver became principal at Thoreau.

After 16 years, Oliver retired in 2004, and Mark Greenfelder moved over from Robinson Secondary School to succeed him.[5]

When Greenfelder became the new principal at West Springfield High School in December 2011, Gregory Hood became the principal the following month, in January 2012.[6]

Hood became the principal of James Madison High School in November 2015, and Madison assistant principal Yusef Azimi moved in as principal of Thoreau.[6]
