Ekoji Buddhist Temple
The Ekoji Buddhist Temple is a Shin Buddhist temple in Fairfax Station.
The temple was founded in 1981. For many years, the temple worshipped in a one-room office in the West Springfield Professional Building.
In 1991 the temple proposed to move to a site at the intersection of Wolf Run Shoals and Clifton Roads in Fairfax Station.[1]
However, devout Buddhism was no match for the rabid NIMBYism of the local residents in Fairfax Station and Clifton, who were concerned that construction of the temple would destroy the rural nature of the area.[1] In furtherance of their goal, the local NIMBY faction produced evidence that the proposed location had contaminated with several feet of asbestos-laden soil that had been illegally dumped by builders in prior years, and the temple subsequently withdrew its application.[2][3]
The temple established a permanent location about 2.5 miles east of the original proposed site in 1998.
