Fairfax Connector
Fairfax Connector is the bus service for Fairfax County.
History
The Connector service began operation in 1985 as a lower-cost alternative to the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority's MetroBus system.[1] Initially, the system had 10 routes and 33 buses and was operated by National Transit Services of Chicago.[1][2]
The initial logo for the service was designed by Robert Walker and Sandy Solesky of Graphic Interpretations.[3]
In 1988, the Environmental Protection Agency proposed levying a $70,000 fine against National Transit Services, which had removed pollution control devices of 28 of the buses in the Connector fleet to improve their performance.[4] By the end of 1988, the system had expanded to 50 buses covering 14 routes.[5]
On August 31, 2003, the contract for the Fairfax Connector was taken over by Connex/Yellow Transportation.[1] Connex had previously operated the service on 23 routes in the southern part of the county since 2002, with First Transit, a Cincinnati-based firm, operating the northern routes.[1][6]
