January
- January 15 – Martha E. Guba is convicted of child neglect for poisoning 10-month-old Ashley Snead at Guba's home day care at 6145 Bardu Avenue in Springfield on July 28, 1987. Guba had given Ashley a dose of the antidepressant drug imipramine to keep the child quiet.[1]
February
- February 6 – 17-year-old Jennifer L. Hauenstein is killed by 21-year-old Wahid Avawi when Avawi drunkenly crashes his Pontiac Trans Am into a Volkswagen Rabbit at about 100 miles per hour at the intersection of Little River Turnpike and Guinea Road in Fairfax.[2][3]
- February 12 – The Fairfax County Judicial Center is renamed the Jennings Building to honor retired Chief Judge Barnard F. Jennings.[4]
- February 13 – 61-year-old Fleming E. Fountaine is found fatally shot in the stairwell of his apartment building at 2935 John Marshall Drive in the Seven Corners area of Falls Church.[5]
- February 17 – 21-year-old Antonio Bowers is stabbed to death at the Lorton Correctional Center Youth Center I facility.[6]
March
- March 3 – 23-year-old Steven T. Souther, 20-year-old Robert Sterzel, and 20-year-old Larry Ruscio are killed and 17-year-old Sean S. Lawrence is seriously injured by 47-year-old Kyong Sung Kil when he strikes them with his Chevy Nomad van on Westmoreland Street in McLean, sending their bodies flying as far as 110 feet. Kil flees the scene, but calls police 10 hours later to turn himself in.[7][8]
- March 9 – Larry L. Sharp pleads guilty to first-degree murder for stabbing Rose Beale to death on December 23, 1987.[9]
- March 14 – Michael P. McWeeny is sworn in as a judge on the Fairfax Circuit Court.[10]
April
- April 11 – 71-year-old Joseph Bula fatally shoots his 68-year-old wife Concetta, then commits suicide at the couple's home at 10320 Rein Commons Court in the Burke Centre Station Commons neighborhood of Burke.[11]
May
- Marion B. Marshall purchases the Springfield home in which she will be murdered 18 years later.[12]
June
- June 15 – 36-year-old James T. Lee is shot to death at his estranged wife's house at 7629 Cork Glen Way in Springfield by Terry Vincent.[13]
- June 19 – 9-year-old Unmi Chung drowns in the swimming pool at the Yorkville Cooperative apartment complex in Fairfax. Chung is taken to the Fairfax Hospital, where she is pronounced dead.[14]
- June 20 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors votes to change the name of the Springfield Bypass to the Fairfax County Parkway.[15]
July
- July 5 – Marc A. Friedlander shoots his 41-year-old estranged wife Zitta to death in the parking lot of the Mitre Corporation in McLean.[16]
- July 21 – 29-year-old Barbara C. Guice is stabbed to death in the parking lot of the Fairmont Gardens apartments in Annandale by Edwin L. Jury, Jr..[17][18][19]
- July 29 – Raymond T. Ball is found not guilty of murder for the fatal shooting of Leon Moore and related charges, including shooting his former girlfriend Leslie McCain in the neck, at her house at 4104 Hummer Road in Annandale early on the morning of July 15, 1983.[20][21][22]
August
- August 6 – 31-year-old computer technician John H. Toland is shot to death in his car at the end of Brim Lane in Centreville by David E. Petruska.[23][24] Toland had hooked up with Petruska at a rest stop on Interstate 66 and had agreed to pay Petruska $20 in exchange for being allowed to fellate him.[25] After Toland finished sucking his cock, Petruska got out of the car, walked over to the driver's side and attempted to carjack Toland, but instead shot him twice in the head.[25] Toland's corpse is discovered early the next morning.[23]
- August 7 – 20-year-old Michael Thurston drowns in the Fairfax County Water Authority's reservoir in Lorton. His corpse is recovered from the 100-foot-deep former quarry the following day.[26][27]
- August 9 – 35-year-old Hadiqa A. Bashar is shot to death by her 47-year-old husband Ghulam in her home at 3406 Slade Court in Falls Church.[28]
- August 14 – Following his arrest on a charge of public drunkeness at his house in Reston, 48-year-old guitarist Roy Buchanan is either murdered or commits suicide and is found hanged in his cell at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.[29]
- August 30 – 30-year-old John M. Malvin beats and mortally injures his 3-month-old son Justin at the family home on Sleepy Hollow Road in Falls Church. Justin is taken to the Fairfax Hospital, where he dies later that evening.[30]
September
- September 16 – 30-year-old Ellwood Smale shoots his estranged wife Shari to death, then commits suicide in her apartment in the Bent Tree Apartments in Centreville. Their corpses are discovered on September 19, along with their 17-month-old son Eric, who had entertained himself by crawling around the decomposing bodies of his dead parents and was dehydrated but otherwise unharmed.[31][32]
October
- October 1 – 42-year-old Vernon Fogg is killed when the bed of the dump truck he is driving rises and strikes the Backlick Road overpass on Interstate 95 in Lorton, causing the truck to overturn.[33]
- October 14 – Judge Thomas J. Middleton sentences 49-year-old Kyong Sung Kil to three years in prison and a $5000 fine for killing 23-year-old Steven T. Souther, 20-year-old Robert Sterzel, and 20-year-old Larry Ruscio in a hit-and-run crash in McLean on March 3.[34]
- October 18 – 41-year-old John E. Dunbar is found bound and shot to death in the parking lot of the Difficult Run Stream Valley Park in McLean.[35]
- October 25 – While searching for murder suspect Ramon A. Bido, Fairfax County Police officers shoot and mortally wound 28-year-old Maria Teresa De la Cruz and injure her 50-year-old husband Inocencio when Inocencio brandishes a handgun at the officers after they break down the door of the couple's basement bedroom in Annandale.[36] Both victims are taken to the Fairfax Hospital, where Maria dies early the next morning.[36]
November
- November 21 - Herndon Town Manager Robert A. Stalzer fires Police Chief George W. Winkel, stating that he has lost confidence in Winkel's ability to act in that capacity. Fairfax County Police Major George E. Kranda, commander of the McLean District Station, becomes the town's acting chief.[37]
December
- December 2 – 32-year-old Anita Antzes is fatally injured in a fire at her apartment at 4225 Wadsworth Court in the Fairmont Gardens apartments in Annandale. She is taken to the Fairfax Hospital, where she dies.[38][39]
- December 3 – 42-year-old Frederick D. Hayes is shot and killed by Fairfax County police officer Gary J. Allen on Route 1 in Alexandria when Hayes wrestles Allen's nightstick away from him and begins beating him with it.[40]
- December 4 – Rachael A. Raver and Warren H. Fulton, III, are murdered in Reston by Alfredo R. Prieto. [41]
- December 6 – Dorothy A. Peterson is murdered in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven in Alexandria by Eugene Turley over a $75 debt for cocaine.[41][42]
- December 11 – 19-year-old Carlos D. Dela'O is shot in the head and mortally wounded by Marcia Anner while watching television in a residence at 6156 Willston Lane in Falls Church. Dela'O is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he dies early the next morning.[43]
Crime
There were 24 murders or other homicides in Fairfax County in 1988.[44]
68 people were killed in 62 traffic crashes in Fairfax County in 1988. 20 of those crashes involved alcohol.
