- January 10 – 8-year-old Kenneth Gunter is killed in Huntington when he is hit by a bus from the private Congressional School.[1]
- January 26 – 7-year-old Michael C. Hudson drowns in the pond in Brookfield Park in Springfield when he falls through the ice while attempting to rescue his dog.[2]
