- January 10 – 8-year-old Kenneth Gunter is killed in Huntington when he is hit by a bus from the private Congressional School.[1]
- January 26 – 7-year-old Michael C. Hudson drowns in the pond in Brookfield Park in Springfield when he falls through the ice while attempting to rescue his dog.[2]
February
- February 1 – A three judge panel rules that the Town of Vienna can annex two square miles of Fairfax County.[3]
March
- March 13 – 41-year-old laborer Charles E. Engle is killed when a 10-foot deep trench he is working in collapses in the Parklawn subdivision of Alexandria.[4]
- March 16 – 20-year-old John Jones uses a .22 caliber rifle to fatally shoot 26-year-old William H. Washington in the Gum Springs area of Alexandria.[5][6]
April
- April 4 – Fairfax County Police Department Captain William L. Durrer narrowly escapes death or injury when several hundred pounds of wet cement crash through the ceiling of his office.[7] The official cause given is that workmen were pouring a floor for a shower in the jail, but the date and nature of the event suggest it was in fact a prank gone horribly wrong.
- April 8 – 43-year-old Earl E. Cundiff fatally shoots himself in the head with a .22 caliber rifle at his home in Fairfax. Cundiff dies en route to the Arlington Hospital.[8]
- April 12 – 11-year-old Ronald Harley is fatally injured during a softball game during his physical education class at Woodley Hills Elementary School in Alexandria when he is struck in the head with a bat by 14-year-old Roger L. Jacobs. Harley is taken to Alexandria Hospital, where he is pronounced dead.[9][10][11]
- April 13 – 57-year-old caretaker William L. Arnold commits suicide by shooting himself in the chest with a 16-gauge shotgun in his car in a barn on the Ravensworth Farm.[12]
May
- May 9 – Two-year-old Deborah Weatherholz is struck and killed by a car driven by the Reverend Thomas J. Larkin on Lee Highway in Centreville when she follows her grandfather, who had crossed the road to pick up the mail.[13]
- May 14 – Disregarding a caution from the operator of the school, and after commenting to another teacher that she is an "expert swimmer", 22-year-old fifth grade teacher Rose Scouras drowns in the swimming pool of the Flint Hill Preparatory School in Oakton.[14]
- May 20 – 20-year-old John Jones is found guilty of first-degree murder for fatally shooting 26-year-old William H. Washington in the Gum Springs area of Alexandria on March 16.[15]
June
- June 3 – Fairfax County Police Officer Loren J. Blamer is injured when he crashes his police car while speeding to the scene of another accident.[16]
- June 12 – While Major Carl R. McIntosh is ill in the hospital, Captain William L. Durrer is appointed acting chief of the Fairfax County Police Department by Carlton C. Massey.[17]
- June 13 – 21-year-old Arthur W. Wertman breaks his neck diving into Timberlake in Oakton. Wertman dies two days later at the Bethesda Naval Hospital.[18]
July
- July 23 – The Navy-Vale Volunteer Fire Department is incorporated.
August
- August 29 – Fairfax County Chief of Police Major Carl R. McIntosh resigns due to ill health.[19]
September
- September 18 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors unanimously votes to create the Fairfax County Water Authority.[20][21]
November
- November 3 – The Hope Lutheran Church in Annandale is formally organized in a service at nearby Saint Alban's Episcopal Church.[22]
- November 16 – Despondent over his wife's death earlier in the year, 59-year-old George J. Thomas, Sr. commits suicide by shooting himself in the head the basement of his son's home at 612 Tazewell Road in Vienna.[23]
December
- December 31 – The Town of Fairfax files suit seeking to annex 5,070.15 acres of Fairfax County.
