Events that took place in Fairfax County in January, 1989:
- January 20 – Taking advantage of a power failure, prisoners at the Lorton Reformatory set several fires at the prison. 26-year-old prisoner Andre Drake is fatally stabbed in the ensuing riot.[1][2]
- January 23 – An 8-year-old boy deliberately shoots his 6-year-old sister in the head with a .32 caliber revolver, mortally wounding her, in the bedroom of their grandmother's townhouse in Franconia.[3]
