Events that took place in Fairfax County in May, 1983:
- May 12 – Following his arrest for public drunkenness, 37-year-old John R. Thompson is found unconscious on the floor of his cell in the Fairfax Jail. He is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he dies early the next day.[1]
- May 13 – Judge Lewis H. Griffith sentences 18-year-old Clydel D. Diggs to 50 years in prison for the murder of 48-year-old David Thomas, Jr. in Mount Vernon on October 28, 1982.[2]
- May 13 – 16-year-old John Svec is struck and mortally injured by drunken Navy nurse Mary Ann Cronin as he walks along Little River Turnpike in Annandale. Svec dies at Fairfax Hospital on May 16.[3][4]
- May 14 – 59-year-old electrician Burton A. Zarin is fatally burned in a fire at the Burlington Coat Factory at 3524 S. Jefferson Street in Bailey's Crossroads. Zarin and another injured worker are taken to the Washington Hospital Center, where he dies on June 2.[5][6]
