Route 1
Prior to the construction of Interstate 95, U.S. Route 1 was the main north-south highway for the East Coast of the United States.
In Fairfax County, U.S. Route 1 is officially named the Richmond Highway, and enters the county below the City of Alexandria, passing through the Alexandria region of the county and the Fort Belvoir military reservation before exiting at the Occoquan River crossing in Lorton.
