Doris A. Torrice
Doris Ann Torrice was the deputy superintendent for operations for the Fairfax County Public Schools system from 1985 to 1989.[1]
Early life and education
The daughter of Ezer A. and Gladys Watts, Doris Ann Watts graduated from Spotsylvania High School. She then attended Mary Washington College, graduating in 1950 with a degree in English and later took her Master's degree in Education from the University of Virginia.[2]
Career
Torrice began teaching in at King George High School in King George County, but after a year moved to Stafford High School in Stafford County.[2][3]
Torrice would teach at Stafford for 12 years, eventually becoming an assistant principal and guidance counselor.[3]
In 1963, Torrice joined FCPS as a guidance counselor, and in 1971 became the first female high school principal in Fairfax County when she took over Groveton High School[3][1]
After two years at Groveton, Torrice became the principal at Hayfield High School.
In 1981, Torrice left Hayfield and became the director of secondary education for FCPS' Department of Instructional Services.[4] However, Torrice's tenure in that office was brief, and she became Area I superintendent in July of that year, replacing Herman A. Howard.[5]
Torrice was appointed deputy superintendent for operations by Robert R. Spillane in 1985.
Personal
She married Joseph H. Torrice on November 17, 1951 in the Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia.[6] The couple would go on to have four children.
