January
- January 8 – 21-year-old Ernest E. Bryant is killed in a car crash in Falls Church.[1]
- January 15 – 20-year-old William Ingram is crushed to death when the car in which he is riding overturns near Falls Church. The driver, 34-year-old Charles L. Madison, flees the scene, but turns himself in at the Fairfax County Police headquarters later in the day.[2]
February
- February 2 – 40-year-old Edwin J. Miller shoots himself in the head with a .32 caliber pistol in the bedroom of his Herndon home.[3]
- February 8 – 8-year-old John Cordwell is killed when his sled slides under a truck driven by 24-year-old Malcolm Wilmer, Jr. at the intersection of Dunmanton Boulevard and Lynwood Street in Alexandria.[4][5]
March
- March 18 – 25-year-old Frank McClary is fatally injured when his truck overturns on Route 236 near the quartermaster depot in Alexandria. McClary is taken to Alexandria Hospital, where he dies.[6]
April
- April 10 – 34-year-old John F. Dwyer and 43-year-old William J. Iselin are killed when the airplane Dwyer is flying crashes on the front lawn of a home on Vale Road in Oakton.[7][8]
June
- June 13 – Secretary of the Commerce Department Charles Sawyer announces plans to acquire 4500 acres in Burke for a new international airport there. The Justice Department files suit in the Federal Court in Alexandria to condemn the land and posts notices of its intent in the local post office.[9][10]
- June 29 – 28-year-old Corporal Okey H. Ailstock drowns while swimming in the Northern Virginia Construction Company's gravel pit on Edsall Road.[11]
July
- July 23 – The Virginia State Police start operating from their new barracks in the Engleside area of Alexandria following a move from their old rented location in Groveton.[12]
August
- August 29 – The Lucky Tavern tourist cabins on Route 1 in Alexandria prove to be not so lucky for 36-year-old Ella F. Moody when she is shot and killed by 34-year-old Texas truck driver Rupert J. Turbeville, who then turns his gun on himself.[13][14][15]
September
- September 7 – 27-year-old Edgar W. Robertson is fatally injured when he crashes his motorcycle into a car driven by 35-year-old Thyra E. Higgson on Route 1 in Groveton. Robertson is taken to Alexandria Hospital, where he dies.[16]
October
- October 6 – 43-year-old Richard J. Comisky is killed when his car is rear-ended by one driven by 42-year-old Hubert N. Camden and is thrown 50 feet from the vehicle into a billboard on Route 236 in Lincolnia.[17]
- October 27 – A Piper Cub crash lands in a cow pasture in Fairfax Station, near the proposed airport site at Burke.[18]
- October 28 – The 11 founders of the Munson Hill Presbyterian Church meet at the Munson Hill Farm of Donald and Anne Wilkins in Falls Church.[19]
November
- November 4 – 76-year-old Annie E. Russell is struck and killed by a car driven by 22-year-old Army Private Edward D. Showalter as she attempts to cross Route 1 in Alexandria.[20]
- November 4 – 48-year-old Roy M. Soers is hit by a car and killed as he walks along Lee Highway west of Centreville.[20]
- November 23 – 25 firemen from the Franconia, Mount Vernon and Penn-Daw Volunteer Fire Departments, as well as 50 soldiers from Fort Belvoir, fight a 25-acre brush fire near the Mount Vernon Open Air Theater off Route 1 in Alexandria.[21]
- November 23 – 40 Chihuahua dogs die in a kennel fire on Valley View Drive in Franconia.[21]
December
- December 3 – The Virginia supreme court upholds the annexation of 7.65 square miles of Fairfax County by the City of Alexandria.[22]
- December 15 – The Centreville Volunteer Fire Department dedicates its new firehouse.[23]
- December 24 – 31-year-old Irma S. Norton commits suicide by asphyxiating herself with carbon monoxide in the basement garage of the family's home at 9 Wilton Road in the Wilton Woods neighborhood of Alexandria. She is discovered by her husband Howard and taken to Alexandria Hospital, where she is pronounced dead.[24]
