January
- January 16 – Commonwealth's Attorney Robert C. Fitzgerald announces his resignation, effective February 28, in preparation for his run for the Virginia State Senate.[1]
- January 28 – 38-year-old Anthony D. Gallo is shot in the head with a .38 caliber pistol by his 37-year-old wife Betty after the two argue in their apartment at 1156 West Wakefield Drive in the Belle View Apartments in Alexandria.[2][3]
- January 30 – Fairfax County Police Detective John F. Briggman fatally shoots 39-year-old Clarence A. Satterwhite in his room at 6509 Washington Drive in the Bailey's Crossroads area of Falls Church.[4][5]
March
- March 16 – 33-year-old William L. Schuele is killed in a head-on collision when his 1959 Volkswagen is struck by a car driven by Army Specialist Harold F. Roark when Roark loses control of his vehicle on Richmond Highway near Groveton. Schuele is taken to Alexandria Hospital, where he is pronounced dead.[6]
April
- The John Marshall Library opens as a storefront in the Rose Hill Shopping Center.
May
- May 27 – 18-year-old John C. Vinson, Jr. is convicted of first-degree murder for shooting 17-year-old Lewis M. Goldfein in Falls Church after Goldfein caught him peeping in the family's house at 1317 Jefferson Avenue on September 1, 1962.[7]
June
- June 2 – 27-year-old Marine Sergeant Donald Welch drowns in the recently-opened Burke Lake.[8]
- June 19 – A three-mile high speed police chase ends badly for 20-year-old Harold E. May when he loses control of the car he is driving and crashes at the intersection of Braddock Road and Little River Turnpike in Alexandria. May suffers multiple injuries when he is thrown from his vehicle and taken to fairfax Hospital, where he is pronounced dead.[9]
- June 21 – Circuit Court Judge Albert V. Bryan, Jr. sentences 18-year-old John C. Vinson, Jr. to life in prison for the 1962 murder of Lewis M. Goldfein in Falls Church.[10]
July
- July 18 – 35-year-old Edwin G. Grimsley drowns in Lake Barcroft when he is struck by an unknown person, fracturing his skull and causing him to drown. Grimsley had entered the lake in pursuit of four teenaged boys who were launching cherry bomb firecrackers at swimmers near Lake Barcroft's beach number 4. His body was discovered in six feet of water a few minutes later, with his jaw broken and his skull so badly fractured that it was determined that he would have died of his injuries had he not drowned.[11][12]
- July 21 – 43-year-old John W. Higdon, Jr. fatally shoots 33-year-old Amy Milton on the side of the road on the George Washington Memorial Parkway near the entrance to the Central Intelligence Agency in McLean.[13]
- July 30 – Lorton teenagers Patricia Ann Ennis, 16, Mabel L. Ennis, 15, and Charlotte L. Jencks, 19, burn to death in their house on the ironically-named Furnace Road. Fortunately, the four male members of the household, William C. Ennis, Clarence Ennis, Vernon Ennis, and Floyd Jencks manage to escape; Jencks saving baby Cindy Ann Ennis by throwing her out a window to her father, Clarence.[14]
August
- August 1 – 50-year-old Edward T. Brooks dies in a fire in a recently-condemned house on Hunter Mill Road in Oakton when, after safely escaping the blaze, he inexplicably runs back into the burning house and resists attempts by his nephew James and another man, Lloyd Mills, to rescue him.[15]
September
- September 26 – 26-year-old sailor William T. Spore beats and fatally injures his five-month-old daughter Dawn in his trailer in the Woodley Hills Court trailer park in Alexandria. The child is taken first to DeWitt Army Hospital on Fort Belvoir, then to Walter Reed Army Hospital, where she dies the following evening.[16][17]
November
- November 2 – 56-year-old Alphues E. Redmond is killed in Falls Church by Walter A. Meyer when Meyer attempts a U-turn on Leesburg Pike and crashes head on into Redmond's car.[18]
- November 3 – The new brick headquarters building for the Burke Volunteer Fire Department is dedicated.[19]
- November 20 – The Virginia State Corporation Commission approves the charter of the Guaranty Bank and Trust Company of Fairfax.[20]
December
- December 11 – 26-year-old William T. Spore pleads guilty to second-degree murder for fatally beating his 5-month-old daughter Dawn in his trailer in the Woodley Hills Court in Alexandria on September 26.[21]
- December 31 – 54-year-old Ernest E. Dawson is fatally injured in a car crash on Route 7 in Falls Church. Dawson is taken to the Fairfax Hospital, where he dies about an hour later.[22]
