Edwin S. Clay, III

Edwin Samuel "Sam" Clay, III (b. July 16, 1945) was the director of the Fairfax County Public Library system from 1982 to 2016.

Early life and education

Clay obtained a B.A. from Randolph Macon College in 1966 and his M.S. in library sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1967.

Career

While at Randolph Macon, Clay first developed his interest in libraries working in the college library.[1]

After graduating from UNC, Clay moved to Virginia Beach and became the director of the Virginia Wesleyan College Library.

After three years at Virginia Wesleyan, Clay was hired as the director of the Virginia Beach Public Library and Information Office in June 1970. Virginia Beach city manager George L. Hanbury hired Clay as an assistant four years later, in 1974.[2]

Initially the assistant for public information, Clay became the assistant for public information and human resources in 1976.[2]

Following the firing of Hanbury, Clay resigned in February 1982 to become the director of the Fairfax County Public Library system.[2]
