- January 14 - Former supervisors Robert C. Cotten, Jr. and A. Claiborne Leigh, along with Trailer Court Ventures partners Nathan Wechsler, Sigmund Goldblatt, and George and Seymour Faigen are convicted in Federal Court of bribery conspiracy involving the rezoning of 83 acres in Hybla Valley in 1961 for the Audubon Estates trailer park.[1]
February
- February 1 – Dexter S. Odin becomes the first Fairfax County Attorney.[2]
- February 5 – 18-year-old Wiley Blevins beats 67-year-old Charlie Nicholson to death with his own cane in a wooded area of the Blevinstown neighborhood of Fairfax.[3][4][5]
- February 10 – Circuit Court Judge Arthur W. Sinclair appoints Robert F. Horan, Jr. as Commonwealth's Attorney to replace Ralph G. Louk.[6]
March
- March 1 – Robert F. Horan officially takes over as Commonwealth's Attorney for Fairfax County from Ralph G. Louk.
- March 1 – 43-year-old Doris Mishou is strangled to death by 27-year-old Michael R. Beam in a room at the Spring Hill Motor Lodge at 5666 Columbia Pike in Falls Church.[7][8]
- March 13 – 20-year-old Wayne M. Hill unintentionally shoots his 19-year-old roommate Frank N. Gadd in the head while playing with a 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun in their shared apartment at 3016 Patrick Henry Drive in Falls Church.[9][10]

- April 8 – 8-year old Billy G. Hanna falls off a raft in the middle of a farm pond in Herndon and drowns.[11]
May
- May 20 - 43-year-old obnoxious house guest Howard F. Woodley is shot to death by 30-year-old Carl H. Watson to settle an argument at Watson's house at 1028 Walker Road in Great Falls.[12]
June
- June 2 – After a marathon 17-hour meeting in which nearly 40 speakers are heard, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors finally votes 4-3 to purchase the assets of the Alexandria Water Company for a court-ordered price of $45.2 million.[13][14]
- June 15 – 19-year-old Glenn D. Blevins is convicted of second-degree murder for the fatal beating of 48-year-old park custodian Greer F. Holyfield in Clifton on September 24, 1966.[15]
July
- July 14 – Fairfax County Police Chief William L. Durrer announces the hiring of the county's first black police officer, 26-year-old Christopher Stokes.[16]
- July 17 – 9-year-old Charles Vox drowns in the pond in Brookfield Park in Springfield when he falls off a homemade raft.[17]
- July 27 – Fairfax County Police Detective Richard H. Cocchini shoots and kills 16-year-old Buddy M. Fultz when Fultz, upon being surprised in the commission of a burglary at the Trailways Bus Depot at 6583 Backlick Road in Springfield, attacks the detective with a tire iron.[18]
- July 31 – Three-year-old Christina H. Vincent is struck and mortally injured by a 16-year-old driver as she crosses Dalebrook Drive in the Waynewood neighborhood of Alexandria. The child is taken to DeWitt Army Hospital on Fort Belvoir, where she dies.[19]
August
- August 6 – A late evening car crash on Blake Lane in Fairfax kills 24-year-old John Bryant, Jr. and 25-year-old Brenda Payne.[20]
September
- Robert E. Simon, Jr. gives up the presidency of Reston, Inc. and becomes chairman of the board, effectively handing control of the project to Gulf Oil, a major investor in the Reston project.[21]
October
- October 6 – The Twin Lakes Golf Course in Clifton opens for play.[22]
November
- November 13 – Hampered by winds that at times gust up to 30 miles per hour, nearly 60 Fairfax County firefighters wage a seven-hour battle to extinguish a large brush fire that ultimately consumes between 50 and 75 acres of underbrush in the Bull Run Regional Park in Centreville.[23]
December
- December 4 – 22-year-old John Monroe pleads guilty to voluntary manslaughter for the fatal beating of 48-year-old park custodian Greer F. Holyfield in Clifton on September 24, 1966.[24]
- December 16 – The Alexandria City Council votes unanimously to bring a suit in Fairfax Circuit Court seeking to annex nearly 8.5 miles of Fairfax County.[25]
