Events that took place in Fairfax County in 2016:

January

• January 9 – 73-year-old Jae Hyun Cho dies of injuries sustained during his suicide attempt following his murder of 56-year-old Kum Yeon in Annandale on December 21, 2015.^[1][2]
• January 19 – Following a tip, detectives of the Fairfax County Police Department's Street Crimes Unit break up a prostitution ring operating out of an apartment at 1411 Northgate Square in the Northgate Square neigborhood of Reston. The FCPD arrests 33-year-old Michael Tillman and 26-year-old Jill Faustin, charging Tillman with pandering and maintaining a bawdy house and Faustin with prostitution and frequenting a bawdy house.^[3]

February

• February 10 – 19-year-old Shaki E. Phillip is stabbed and mortally wounded in the 7400 block of Loughboro Lane in Springfield by 20-year-old Dilshad Dosky.^[4] Phillip is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he is pronounced dead.^[4]
• February 23 – 35-year-old Babatunde E. Fadahunsi is shot to death in his apartment in the Skyline Towers at 5597 Seminary Road in Falls Church during a botched ripoff by 25-year-old Bernardo E. Ford, Jr.^[5][6]

March

• March 11 – 83-year-old Johan De Leede is fatally shot at his home at 6017 River Drive in Lorton.^[7][8] De Leede is taken to the hospital, where he dies.^[7]
• March 14 – 25-year-old Cristian G. Dominguez unintentionally kills himself and his front-seat passenger, 28-year-old Cristian A. Merino, when he crashes the Saturn he is driving into a tree on Burke Commons Road in Burke.^[9]
• March 25 – 29-year-old William G. Martines-Palma is fatally stabbed in the Rose Hill area of Alexandria by 19-year-old John Martin Mercado. Martines-Palma is first taken to the Inova HealthPlex, but later moved to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he dies.^[10][11]

April

• April 2 – 26-year-old Jeffrey Ponce Aguilar is struck by a Fairfax County Police cruiser and mortally injured in Alexandria. Ponce Aguilar is taken to the Inova HealthPlex in Franconia, where he dies.^[12][13]
• April 20 – 16-year-old Brenda C. Soto is found unresponsive in a bathroom at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke. She is taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she is pronounced dead.^[14][15]
• April 24 – 21-year-old Hosung Lee is beaten by a mob and stabbed at a party in Herndon. Not realizing that he is mortally wounded, Lee is taken to his home in Centreville by his friends and put to bed, where he dies and is discovered the following afternoon.^[16][17]
• April 26 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors confirms the appointment of Jessica A. Hudson as director of the Fairfax County Public Library system.^[18]
• April 26 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors appoints Deputy County Attorney Elizabeth D. Teare as the new county attorney, replacing David P. Bobzien.^[19]

May

• May 4 – 59-year-old Samuel O. Abutoh repeatedly rams his Hummer SUV into the front of the Silver Diner at 8101 Fletcher Street in McLean, mortally injuring 74-year-old Andrew D. Sheren. Abutoh then pours a flammable liquid on the vehicle and himself and sets it on fire, but is pulled from the vehicle.
• May 12 – 33-year-old Matthew E. Calendine stumbles into the road in front of his house at 6143 Shiplett Boulevard and is struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver.^[20]
• May 16 – 18-year-old Erika Dunn is struck by a train and mortally injured as she and two friends walk along the railroad tracks in Burke. Dunn is taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she dies.^[21]
• May 18 – 71-year-old Medardo Carrillo Arias is struck and killed by a 51-year-old driver in a 2012 Jeep Wrangler as he attempts to cross Leesburg Pike near Glen Carlyn Drive in the Culmore area of Falls Church.^[22]
• May 20 – 24-year-old Tarreece J. Sampson is shot to death outside his apartment building in the Cityside Huntington Metro Apartments complex in Alexandria.^[23]
• May 26 – 50-year-old Kathi L. Lipp commits suicide at her home at 11526 Seneca Farm Way in Great Falls.^[24]

June

• June 6 – 20-year-old Michael N. Powell pleads guilty to second-degree murder for the August 2015 killing of 42-year-old Khalid Aboumalik in the Huntington Park in Alexandria.^[25]
• June 7 – 74-year-old William Patton dies in an early morning fire at his apartment at 10171 Mosby Woods Drive in the Mosby Woods neighborhood of Fairfax. The speculation is that the fire was unintentionally set by Patton smoking in bed.^[26][27]
• June 7 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approves a resolution to ask the Circuit Court to order a referendum on a food and beverage tax in Fairfax County.^[28]
• June 8 – 67-year-old Hiep Van Le settles an argument with his son-in-law, 45-year-old Dang D. Ngo, by shooting Ngo to death in the front yard of his home at 3408 Beverly Drive in Annandale. Le also fatally wounds his 40-year-old daughter Sophia, who is taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she dies.^[29]
• June 22 – 67-year-old Mary M. Harnage is killed when she is run over by her 1987 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck in her driveway at 4213 Sleepy Hollow Road in Annandale.^[30]
• June 24 – Former Fairfax County Police Officer Adam D. Torres is sentenced to a year in jail by Circuit Court Judge Robert J. Smith for fatally shooting John B. Geer at Geer's Springfield townhouse on August 29, 2013.^[31][32]

July

• July 14 – 17-year-old Jeremy J. Munga drowns while swimming in Lake Barcroft in Falls Church.^[33]
• July 20 – 23-year-old Andre C. Wilkins is convicted of murder and other charges for fatally shooting 22-year-old Marquel L. Davis and wounding another man in the Hybla Valley area of Alexandria on November 18, 2015.^[34]
• July 20 – 24-year-old David R. Alison, IV unintentionally kills himself when he loses control of the 2001 Volvo S40 he is driving and crashes into a tree on River Bend Road in Great Falls. Alison is ejected from the car, which lands on top of him and bursts into flames.^[35]
• July 27 – 58-year-old Roy E. Rumsey murders his 2-year-old daughter Kyra P. Franchetti, then sets his house at 12107 Fairfax Hunt Road in Fairfax on fire before committing suicide.^[36]

August

• August 5 – 28-year-old Henry H. Sterne is fatally injured in an early morning crash in Great Falls. Sterne is taken to the hospital, where he is pronounced dead.^[37]
• August 6 – 19-year-old park employee Kempton A. Bonds fatally stabs 35-year-old caterer Tyonne D. Johns at Cabell's Mill to settle an argument over folding chairs in the Ellanor C. Lawrence Park in Centreville. Johns is taken to the hospital, where she dies.^[38][39]
• August 15 – Fairfax County Sheriff's deputy Patrick McPartlin fatally shoots 29-year-old Jovany Martinez at the bus stop outside of Inova Fairfax Hospital when Martinez attacks McPartlin with a pointed sign post.^[40][41]
• August 28 – 76-year-old Hung Soon Seo is struck by a hit-and-run driver as she crosses North Shore Drive near Village Road in Reston. Seo is taken to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she dies later that evening.^[42]
• August 29 – 23-year-old Nicholas V. Hammond drunkenly kills 52-year-old Elmi Suada on Interstate 495 near the Little River Turnpike in Annandale when he rear-ends the Toyota Camry she is riding in with his Nissan Maxima. Hammond flees the scene on foot, but is picked up by police a little over an hour and a half later.^[43]
• August 30 – 56-year-old Aaron McCullough is struck and killed by a 69-year-old woman driving a 2015 GMC Yukon SUV when he starts walking in a lane on the Richmond Highway in the Mount Vernon area of Alexandria.^[44][45]

September

• September 3 – 53-year-old Kelly M. Scott is found dead in his cell at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.^[46][47]
• September 7 – 17-year-old Maurice A. Berger is shot to death in the 9700 block of Hagel Circle in the Terrace Town Homes of Gunston development of Lorton when he and 18-year-old Daniel Winkfield attempt to rob an 18-year-old Manassas Park man.^[48][49]
• September 9 – 23-year-old Andre C. Wilkins is sentenced to 70 years in prison for fatally shooting 22-year-old Marquel L. Davis and wounding another man in the Hybla Valley area of Alexandria on November 18, 2015.^[50]
• September 19 – Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Karen K. Garza tenders her resignation from FCPS, effective December 16.

October

• October 2 – 400 people are evacuated from the building at 6631 Wakefield Drive in the River Towers condominiums in Alexandria when part of the building shifts, damaging 180 condos in the 53-year-old building.^[51][52]
• October 6 – The Fairfax County School Board announces that deputy superintendent Steven A. Lockard will serve as interim superintendent following the departure of Karen K. Garza.^[53]
• October 7 – 20-year-old Michael N. Powell is sentenced to 25 years in prison for the 2015 murder of Khalid Aboumalik in the Huntington Park in Alexandria, with 15 of those years suspended.^[54]

• October 8 – 37-year-old Yesenia Esmeralda Funes is killed in a hit-and-run crash by 23-year-old Khoa Do Dang Nguyen on Interstate 66 in Fairfax.^[55][56]
• October 15 – While chasing his dog, 46-year-old James C. Kim walks into the road and is struck by a 2015 Toyota Corolla driven by a 23-year-old man on Prosperity Avenue near Morningside Drive in Fairfax. Kim is taken to the hospital, where he dies.^[57][58][59]
• October 18 – 55-year-old motorcyclist Joseph T. Timpane is struck and killed by an 81-year-old woman when she runs a red light at the intersection of Route 7 and Towlston Road in Vienna.^[60]
• October 21 – 19-year-old Haroon Jameel unintentionally kills himself when he crashes his 2016 Yamaha R3 motorcycle into the back of a disabled truck on Sully Road near the Lee Jackson Memorial Highway in Chantilly.^[61]

November

• November 1 – 35-year-old Cory Wilkins is convicted of first-degree murder and gun charges for fatally shooting 19-year-old Cristian Aranzana Vasquez in the parking lot of the Days Inn at 6100 Richmond Highway in Alexandria on April 4, 2004.^[62][63]
• November 8 – A referendum which would have imposed a 4 percent tax on restaurant meals and other prepared foods served in the county is defeated in the general election.^[64]
• November 12 – 69-year-old Eugene M. Kotlarchuk is struck and killed by a woman driving a Hyundai Sonata as he jaywalks across Richmond Highway in Alexandria.^[65]
• November 19 – 56-year-old Lewis E. Reeder settles an early morning argument with his 64-year-old girlfriend Delores Williams by setting her on fire at her home at 4911 Keeler Court in Alexandria.^[66] Williams dies of her injuries on November 30.^[67]
• November 24 – 69-year-old Leif E. Ohlsson is murdered in his apartment at 5505 Seminary Road in the Skyline Square Condominiums in Falls Church by 24-year-old Fredy Cisneros Agustin during a bungled burglary.^[68][69]
• November 28 – 35-year-old Yesenia Membrano-Diaz is fatally stabbed by her husband, 48-year-old Ricardo Molina-Martinez, at their townhouse at 8462 Diablo Court in the Pinewood South Condominiums neighborhood of Mount Vernon.^[70][71]

December

• December 1 – 60-year-old David D. Baines is struck and mortally injured as he crosses Frye Road near its intersection with Richmond Highway in the Mount Vernon section of Alexandria. Baines is taken to the hospital, where he dies early the next morning.^[72]
• December 22 – 22-year-old Henok G. Yohannes is found shot to death in his home at 6409 Blarney Stone Court in Springfield.^[73]
• December 23 – 22-year-old Kedest S. Simeneh is found shot to death in the yard of the home at 9504 Cordwood Court in the Cardinal Glen neighborhood of Burke.^[74]
