- February 1 – The U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service creates the Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge to provide a habitat for the bald eagle, which was an endangered species at the time.
- February 7 – Karl J. Ingebritsen, a former CIA employee, is named the first executive director of the Reston Homeowners Association, a position roughly analogous to a town manager.[1]
- February 21 – The door of Annandale High School is damaged when someone sets off a blasting cap in front of the school, shattering the glass.[2]
