- January 16 – Commonwealth's Attorney Robert C. Fitzgerald announces his resignation, effective February 28, in preparation for his run for the Virginia State Senate.[1]
- January 28 – 38-year-old Anthony D. Gallo is shot in the head with a .38 caliber pistol by his 37-year-old wife Betty after the two argue in their apartment at 1156 West Wakefield Drive in the Belle View Apartments in Alexandria.[2][3]
- January 30 – Fairfax County Police Detective John F. Briggman fatally shoots 39-year-old Clarence A. Satterwhite in his room at 6509 Washington Drive in the Bailey's Crossroads area of Falls Church.[4][5]
