Events that took place in Fairfax County in January, 1970:
- January 4 – 54-year-old Walena Pawley is burned to death in a fire at her home at 7625 Trammell Road in Annandale.[1]
- January 10 – 49-year-old William P. Sikes shoots his 53-year-old wife Mary in the head with a .38 caliber revolver when she turns off the TV set he is watching at their home at 6819 Jackson Avenue in Falls Church. Mary dies of her wound several hours later.[2][3]
- January 13 – 12-year-old Steven C. Bailey hangs himself in the basement of his home at 6809 Hayfield Road in Alexandria.[4][5]
- January 27 – Five cars of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad's Gulf Coast Special train derail and plunge down a 60-foot embankment about a half-mile west of South Van Dorn Street near Alexandria, killing 67-year-old Clara Fleming, 58-year-old Eva King Witherspoon and 56-year-old Elina McCray, and injuring 51 other passengers.[6][7][8]
- January 31 – 12-year-old Perry Ritter drowns in the indoor swimming pool at the Dyer family home at 905 Frome Lane in McLean.[9]
