Events that took place in Fairfax County in January, 1986:
- January 3 – An early morning fire kills 37-year-old Tanette E. Mattivi and mortally injures 21-year-old Allison R. Carnwath in Mattivi's townhouse at 204 Commons Drive in Vienna.[1] Carnwath is rescued from the blaze by firefighter Rodney Fridley, Jr., who breaks his ankle during the rescue, but dies of the effects of smoke inhalation two days later.[1][2]
- January 8 – Harris N. Miller is elected chairman of the Democratic Party in Fairfax County.[3]
- January 14 – 31-year-old Adalberto S. Irizarry fatally shoots 38-year-old Manuel DeJesus Rodriguez in the head in a wooded area off Furnace Road in Lorton.[4][5]
- January 26 – 53-year-old Feridoun Ayazi shoots his 41-year-old estranged wife Parvane, then commits suicide at his sister-in-law's house at 13409 Parcher Avenue in Herndon.[6]
