January
- January 3 – An early morning fire kills 37-year-old Tanette E. Mattivi and mortally injures 21-year-old Allison R. Carnwath in Mattivi's townhouse at 204 Commons Drive in Vienna.[1] Carnwath is rescued from the blaze by firefighter Rodney Fridley, Jr., who breaks his ankle during the rescue, but dies of the effects of smoke inhalation two days later.[1][2]
- January 8 – Harris N. Miller is elected chairman of the Democratic Party in Fairfax County.[3]
- January 14 – 31-year-old Adalberto S. Irizarry fatally shoots 38-year-old Manuel DeJesus Rodriguez in the head in a wooded area off Furnace Road in Lorton.[4][5]
February
- February 3 – 41-year-old Gerald Bigam unintentionally kills himself and his passenger, 29-year-old Esther Bobcock, when he runs a red light at the intersection of Routes 28 and 50 in Chantilly.[6]
- February 11 – 22-year-old Allen A. Crutchfield is shot in the back of the head and killed outside his Chantilly townhouse by Pagan's motorcycle enthusiast club member Mark Crawn.[7][8][9]
- February 14 – While inspecting the damage to his car from an earlier crash, 34-year-old Norman E. Brissette is mortally injured in a hit and run crash by Lance Corporal Richard H. Lewis in the 9900 block of Richmond Highway in Lorton. His leg torn off and suffering from severe head injuries, Brissette is taken to the Mount Vernon Hospital, where he dies on the afternoon of February 17.[10][11]
- February 16 – As she walks along South Kings Highway in Alexandria, 52-year-old Maria M. Sandy is struck and killed by car driven by a 37-year-old woman. Sandy is taken to the Fairfax Hospital, where she is pronounced dead.[11]
March
- March 13 – A Fairfax County jury takes 35 minutes to find 16-year-old Thomas L. Grogg guilty of murder, robbery and use of a firearm for killing 28-year-old Hallie Hollis in Lorton on October 20, 1985.[12]
- March 29 – 28-year-old John J. Goodwin is shotgunned to death in Chantilly by 29-year-old Anthony Raffo, a member of the Pagan's motorcycle enthusiast club.[13][14]
April
- April 18 – Fairfax Circuit Court Judge William G. Plummer sentences 16-year-old Thomas L. Grogg to 40 years in prison for the murder of Hallie Hollis in Lorton on October 20, 1985.[15]
- April 22 – 21-year-old David B. Wright fatally shoots 33-year-old manager Woo Il Pak and wounds his 30-year-old wife Sunye during a botched robbery at the Shell Food Mart at 5757 Seminary Road in Falls Church. In a particularly shooty mood, Wright also manages to shoot himself in the leg while fleeing the scene, and is arrested at a Baltimore-area hospital following a tip. Pak is airlifted to Fairfax Hospital, where he dies five hours later.[16][17]
- April 23 – 31-year-old Adalberto S. Irizarry pleads guilty to second-degree murder for shooting 38-year-old Manuel DeJesus Rodriguez in the head in a wooded area off Furnace Road in Lorton on January 14.[18]
June
- June 7 – The 9.1-mile extension of Metrorail's Orange Line opens, adding the East and West Falls Church, Dunn Loring, and Vienna Metro Stations to the system.[19]
July
- July 2 – 21-year-old David B. Wright pleads guilty to first-degree murder, malicious wounding, and use of a firearm for fatally shooting 33-year-old Woo Il Pak and wounding Pak's 30-year-old wife Sunye during a botched robbery at the Shell Food Mart at 5757 Seminary Road in Falls Church on April 22.[20]
August
- August 2 – 21-year-old Timothy M. Ramberg kills 36-year-old Martha Griffith on West Ox Road near Waples Mill Road in Oakton when the truck he is driving crosses the center line and smashes head-on into Griffith's. Griffith is taken to the Fairfax Hospital, where she is pronounced dead.[21][22]
October
- October 10 – Following a 10½-hour standoff at his apartment at 2752 Hollywood Road in Falls Church, Mark T. Brumsted, a 25-year-old schizophrenic, is shot by Fairfax County police officers Jackie L. Mitchem and Sergeant Michael LoMonaco when he confronts them with a 20-gauge shotgun. Brumsted is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he is pronounced dead.[23]
November
- November 13 – An early morning fire causes an estimated $1 million in damage to the Springfield Tower building in Springfield.[24]
December
- The South County Community Shelter opens in Fort Belvoir.[25]
- December 19 – The 12-theater Lee Highway Multiplex Cinemas opens in Merrifield.
- December 27 – Upset that she intends to break up with him, 19-year-old Mark E. Willey shoots his 19-year-old girlfriend Karen E. Emmert several times in the face at her apartment on Gainsborough Court in the City of Fairfax, killing her, then turns the .22 caliber rifle on himself, shooting himself once in the forehead. Willey is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he dies early the next morning. Willey's heart is used in the first Washington area's first heart transplant.[26][27][28]
- December 28 – Dr. Edward A. Lefrak performs the Washington area's first heart transplant on 20-year-old Eva Baisey at Fairfax Hospital.[29][30]
