- May 23 – 49-year-old Debra Chiles dies from carbon monoxide poisoning during an early morning fire in her home at 9207 Cardinal Forest Lane in the Gables at Gunston Corner neighborhood in Lorton. Despite being on the phone with 911 after the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department arrives and giving her location, a third floor bathroom, rescuers fail to locate Chiles until 40 minutes later, when they discover her asphyxiated corpse.[1][2][3][4]
- May 23 – A Fairfax County Police officer shoots and kills 28-year-old Randall L. Rollins at the Fairview Motel in Alexandria when Rollins, who was armed, fails to follow police instruction.[5]
