Springfield Town Center
The Springfield Town Center is a regional shopping center in Springfield.
Development of the Springfield Mall was originally planned for a 50-acre site west of the Shirley Highway just north of the Springfield Plaza, bounded by Cumberland Avenue and Amherst Avenue.[1]
However, problems with that location forced the relocation of the site to a 70-acre parcel located across the Shirley Highway along Loisdale Road.[1]
Construction of the mall was ushered in at a ceremonial groundbreaking at the Springfield Country Club on February 22, 1971, when poor weather forced the event indoors.[2] The mall opened on February 28, 1973.
In April 1973, City Stores Corporation announced it was shutting down the Lansburgh's department store chain, forcing the closing of its newly opened store in the mall.[3][4] The Lansburgh's store was purchased by Arlen Realty & Development Corporation, which opened an E. J. Korvette's department store.[5]
Although the mall had been in existence for over ten years, it was not until 1984 that the owner exercised his option to purchase the land for over $14 million.[6]
In March of 2012, Vornado Realty Trust issued eviction notices to its remaining tenants, allowing Vornado to close the mall in June and demolish and redevelop the mall.[7]
After two years of construction which saw the mall stripped to bare concrete and steel and completely rebuilt, the renamed Springfield Town Center opened on October 17, 2014.[8][9]
