- January 1 – 41-year-old Serena L. Vierimaa dies of a gunshot wound at her home at 7108 Healy Drive in Springfield.[1]
- January 15 – 22-year-old Danyelle Lynn Anderson of Manassas is struck and killed by a Virginia Railway Express train while crossing the tracks at the Burke Centre Station in Burke.[2][3][4]
- January 17 – After finishing his shift at O'Sullivan's Irish Pub in Herndon, 30-year-old Damien P. Scanlan slips on some ice and fatally fractures his skull.[5] Herndon Police discover Scanlan's body in a creek near the intersection of Center and Locust streets.[6]
- January 19 – While walking to mass at the Saint Bernadette Catholic Church in Springfield, 74-year-old pediatrician Dr. Thomas J. Sullivan is struck and killed by a 2008 Mazda 323 as he attempts to cross Old Keene Mill Road.[7]
February
- February 3 – Attempting to flee from a Fairfax County Police Officer, 27-year-old Eduin Joel Galeas Mejia unintentionally kills himself and his 20-year-old passenger Orlin Misael Nolasco Hernandez when he crashes the 1999 Dodge Neon he is driving into a tree near the intersection of Hilltop Road with Old Lee Highway in Merrifield.[8][9]
- February 20 – 44-year-old Alvaro Zepeda is stabbed to death in his apartment at 2903 John Marshall Drive in the Seven Corners Apartments complex in Falls Church by 32-year-old Marlon Oswaldo Gudiel Polanco.[10][11][12]
- February 23 – 20-year-old Luz F. Inscoe unintentionally kills her passenger, 20-year-old Vuthea Hiep, when she crashes her 2002 Volkswagon Cabriolet into a telephone pole on Rolling Road near Terra Grande Avenue in Springfield.[13]
- February 26 – 15-year-old W. T. Woodson High School sophomore Jack Chen is struck and killed by a Virginia Railway Express train near his home in Fairfax Station.[14]
March
- March 3 – 20-year-old Fidel Salmeron, Jr. is killed in a vehicle crash and fire on Ox Road in Lorton.[15]
- March 23 – 24-year-old David Alberto Sanchez is mortally injured when the shuttle bus in which he is riding overturns on Interstate 95 in Lorton after being cut off by a speeding Acura driven by 31-year-old Raphael Manuel Barrientos of Dumfries.[16] Sanchez and another injured passenger are airlifted to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he dies of his injuries.[16]
- March 29 – Gerson Adoni Martinez Aguilar is stabbed to death and beheaded in Holmes Run Stream Valley Park in Falls Church by several members of the MS-13 youth organization.[17][18]
April
- April 7 – Vienna Councilmember Laurie DiRocco is appointed mayor by the Town Council to fill the vacancy created by Mayor M. Jane Seeman's death on February 23.[19]
- April 17 – A gas explosion in the Audubon Estates trailer park in Alexandria damages 21 mobile homes.[20]
- April 25 – 25-year-old Carol N. Lutsky is sentenced to 22.6 years in prison by Judge Robert J. Smith for beating and mortally injuring her girlfriend's son Nehemiah Williams in her Vienna home on October 5, 2011.[21][22]
May
- May 6 – 72-year-old South Carolina woman Mary J. Treacy is mortally injured in a three-vehicle crash on I-495 in Springfield. Treacy is taken to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she dies.[23][24]
- May 16 – Kyle Alifom is sentenced to six years and eight months in prison by U.S. District Judge Claude M. Hilton for his role in the August 2013 overdose death of Emylee A. Lonczak in Vienna.[25]
- May 17 – 20-year-old Domingo Eduardo Santiago Cuchil is stabbed and mortally wounded in Centreville.[26] Santiago is taken to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he dies.[26]
- May 19 – 24-year-old Jose Blanco-Calzadilla pleads guilty to voluntary manslaughter for fatally shooting 16-year-old Gerard Gomez at a party at the Residence Inn in Vienna on September 15, 2013.[27]
- May 20 – 71-year-old Benfeng Liu is struck and killed as she attempts to cross Lee Highway near Trinity Parkway in Centreville.[28]
- May 24 – 24-year-old Junior Abel Flores is stabbed and mortally injured in Springfield. Flores is found lying in the roadway near the intersection of Backlick Road and Highland Street and taken to the hospital, where he dies.[29]
- May 27 – 34-year-old MaryAnn Brookie is killed in a fire that destroys her condo at 8228 Catbird Circle in the Gunston Corner neighborhood in Lorton.[30]
June
- June 7 – The Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail is formally dedicated at a ceremony in Lorton.[31]
- June 9 – 16-year-old Kevin Johnson is shot and mortally wounded by Leon M. Johnson at 4311 Pembrook Village Drive in Alexandria. Johnson and a 14-year-old who was also shot are both taken to the hospital, where Johnson dies of his injuries.[32][33][34]
- June 18 – 35-year-old Juan Ramon Matetu Figueroa fatally stabs his 28-year-old girlfriend Glenda Aviles in her rented room in a home in Falls Church.[35][36]
- June 25 – An early morning fire in the house at 5605 Willow Valley Road in Clifton mortally injures 76-year-old Bok Yong An and seriously injures two other occupants of the home. An is flown to the Washington Hospital Burn Center, where he dies of his injuries.[37]
July
- July 21 – After over a century in business, the Reston-based Truland Group shuts down and closes its doors.[38]
- July 25 – 62-year-old Mary Gibson disappears after leaving her Springfield home to walk her dog. She is found dead in the Pohick Stream Valley Park the next morning.[39]
- July 29 – By a 6-4 vote, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors rejects a proposal by EnviroSolutions to extend use of the Lorton Landfill to the year 2025, meaning the landfill will close in 2018.[40]
August
- August 2 – While trimming the azalea bushes in front of her home in Annandale, 44-year-old Melodye Creason is stung by a bald-faced hornet and suffers a severe allergic reaction, causing her throat to swell up and prevent her from breathing. Creason is taken to the hospital, but suffers massive brain damage from the lack of air and is removed from life support eight days later. Creason dies on August 13.[41][42][43]
- August 14 – 20-year-old Edy Jimenez Balderrama is mortally injured when he crashes his 1999 Honda motorcycle into a 2004 Dodge van on Braddock Road at the intersection with the Fairfax County Parkway in Fairfax. Jimenez is airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he dies.[44]
- August 18 – W. T. Woodson High School principal Jeff Yost announces his retirement in September.[45]
- August 25 – 54-year-old Clayton F. Young is struck by a tractor-trailer on the Fairfax County Parkway near Fox Mill Road. Young is taken to the Reston Hospital Center, where he is pronounced dead.[46]
September
- September 1 – 27-year-old Filaberto Felipe Paz Ramirez is murdered in the Culmore section of Falls Church.[47][48]
- September 6 – A number of local government and park officials attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly-opened Sully Highlands Park in Herndon.[49][50]
- September 8 – 32-year-old Brener Omar Llamas Rivera is struck and mortally injured by a 2011 Malibu as he jaywalks across West Ox Road near Polo Drive in Fairfax. Llamas is taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he is pronounced dead shortly thereafter.[51]
- September 16 – The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Fairfax County Public Safety Headquarters building is held in Fairfax.[52][53]
- September 25 – 41-year-old Lorena Gimenez is struck and killed by a Fairfax Connector bus at the Huntington Metro Station.[54]
- September 28 – 16-year-old Cara L. Golias commits suicide in the Hemlock Overlook Regional Park in Clifton. Her corpse is found rear the railroad trestle in the park the following day.[55]
October
- October 15 – 27-year-old Jordan Douglas is killed in a crash in Chantilly when he loses control of the 2013 Ford Escape he is driving on Route 50 at the interchange with Route 28.[56]
- October 15 – Shortly after being reported missing, 15-year-old Brooke A. Buesking is struck and killed by a train in Burke.[57]
- October 17 – The renovated Springfield Town Center opens in Springfield.[58]
- October 22 – 77-year-old Gladys Moline is fatally injured in a car crash in Fairfax Station when the driver of the 1994 Lexus she is riding in turns into the path of a 2007 Freightliner truck, which strikes the Lexus. Moline is taken to the hospital, where she dies.[59][60]
- October 27 – Surprising even his own attorney, 26-year-old Caleb Crew unexpectedly pleads guilty to first-degree murder before Judge John Tran for strangling his 31-year-old wife Andrea in a credit union parking lot on August 7, 2013.[61][62]
- October 31 – While riding a moped along Wilson Boulevard in Falls Church, 36-year-old Eliseo Hernandez Diaz is struck and killed by the driver of a 2007 Volkswagen sedan, whose driver flees the scene.[63]
November
- November 17 – 62-year-old Hector Flores is struck and killed while crossing Columbia Pike in Annandale.[64]
December
- December 2 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors votes 8-2 to consider increasing their pay from $75,000 per year.[65]
- December 13 – 20-year-old Darnell R. Ford is mortally wounded in an early morning shooting in the parking lot of the Safari Restaurant at 5831 Columbia Pike in Falls Church. Ford is taken to the Alexandria Hospital, where he dies that afternoon.[66][67]
- December 13 – 29-year-old Mario Cedillo Santiago is fatally stabbed at his shared condo at 14439 Cool Oak Lane in Centreville by Daniel Jacinto Marco Cedillo. Cedillo Santiago is taken to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he dies later that evening.[68][69][70]
- December 15 – An evening house fire at 7032 Barbara Road in the Windsor Estates neighborhood of Alexandria claims the life of 53-year-old William A. Hakenson.[71]
