January
- January 5 – Circuit Court Judge Bruce D. White sentences Carmela dela Rosa to 35 years in prison for murdering her 2½-year-old granddaughter, Angelyn Ogdoc, by dropping her from a 44-foot-high walkway in a parking garage at the Tysons Corner Center on November 29, 2010.[1]
- January 15 – 22-year-old Ryah Leslie is murdered by her roommate, 22-year-old Benjamin Walker, in their shared condo at 5923 Gunther Court in Centreville.[2]
- January 28 – First Lieutenant William Jacoby becomes the Assistant Commander of the Franconia District Station of the Fairfax County Police Department.[3]
February
- February 1 – 69-year-old Basil Knick is killed by 59-year-old Darryl Barnes when Barnes strikes Knick with his car on Fox Mill Road in Reston.[4]
- February 2 – 54-year-old Richard Hanson is convicted of shooting and killing his 75-year-old father Gary as he napped in the family home at 7628 Chancellor Way in Springfield on July 19, 2011.[5]
- February 3 – Tony Tong is sentenced to 30 years in prison by Judge Lorraine Nordlund for fatally shooting his wife, Kathleen Tran, in the family home in Chantilly on October 22, 2010.[6]
March
- March 9 – Gbassay Koroma pleads guilty to murder for fatally stabbing his 40-year-old father Francis at their Centreville apartment on May 27, 2011.[7]
- March 27 – 13-year-old Alexis Jackson is shot to death by her father, 40-year-old former Fairfax County Police officer John W. Jackson, Jr., who then commits suicide in his SUV in the driveway of the home at 3800 Forest Grove Drive in Annandale.[8][9]
April
- April 10 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors votes unanimously to appoint Edward L. Long, Jr. as the Fairfax County Executive, replacing the retiring Anthony H. Griffin.[10][11]
- April 29 – 42-year-old Amadeo Guerra-Giron is stabbed in Chantilly by William Santiago. Guerra-Giron is transferred under medical care in May to his home country of Guatemala, where he dies of his injuries on July 23.[12]
May
- May 1 – 56-year-old Debra B. Anderson commits suicide in the Target in Burke.[13]
- May 4 – 21-year-old Shelinda D. Arrington is run over and killed by 32-year-old Gloria A. McMillan when Arrington confronts McMillan on Harrison Lane in the Groveton section of Alexandria.[14]
- May 12 – A ceremony is held celebrating the recent completion of several improvements, including a new playground, pavilion, and volleyball court, in the Mount Eagle Park in Alexandria.[15]
- May 16 – 47-year-old Morgan D. Monroe, Jr. is shot to death in the Mount Vernon area of Alexandria.[16]
- May 19 – Fairfax County Police fatally shoot 22-year-old Gray A. Combs, Jr. when he menaces them with a sword after they discover him hiding in a closet in an apartment in the 5700 block of Backlick Road in Springfield. Combs had been sought on charges of multiple charges of producing and possessing child pornography for taking nude photographs of his 16-year-old girlfriend with his cell phone.[17]
- May 24 – A cooking fire mortally injures 91-year-old Carroll Adams in his second floor apartment at 1808 Old Meadow Road in McLean. Adams is taken to the Washington Hospital Center with third degree burns over nearly half his body, and dies the next day.[18]
June
- June 5 – 27-year-old Dejon L'Air Williams crashes her Honda Civic on Lee Highway in Fairfax, killing herself and her 5-year-old daughter Faith and mortally injuring her 7-year-old daughter Victoria.[19] Victoria is taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she dies of her injuries two days later.[20]
- June 7 – 24-year-old Mark Shelor fatally stabs 57-year-old Grady A. Vickers at the office of PRS at 1761 Old Meadow Rd, Suite 100, in McLean.[21]
- June 8 – Gbassay Koroma is sentenced to 20 years in prison by Judge Charles J. Maxfield for stabbing his 40-year-old father Francis to death in the family apartment in Centreville on May 27, 2011. Ten years of Koroma's sentence are suspended on the condition that he complete mental health treatment.[22]
- June 9 – 40-year-old Bharat P. Patel is found dead near his apartment in the 11900 block of Winterthur Lane in Reston.[23]
- June 19 – 24-year-old Paul Wickshire unintentionally kills himself in Springfield when he loses control of his 1998 Ford Explorer, strikes a fire hydrant, and rolls his vehicle. Wickshire is ejected during the crash and dies at the scene on Leesville Boulevard near Hinton Street.[24]
- June 21 – Kim Retzer is named principal of South Lakes High School in Reston.[25]
- June 29 – A large thunderstorm kills 2 people in Springfield. 26-year-old Khiet Nguyen is killed when a tree falls on his car as he drives along Old Keene Mill Road, and a 90-year-old woman is killed as she lies in her bed when a tree falls on her house on Carr Place.[26] A third person, 19-year-old Dylan S. Cooper, is mortally injured when a power line falls on him near his home on Haycock Road in Falls Church.[27]
July
- July 8 – 21 year-old Nicholas A. Kaelber is fatally shot by Fairfax County Police officer Edward Carpenter when Kaelber resists detention and fires a handgun at the officer.[28]
- July 9 – 54-year-old Man Ha Park pleads guilty to murder and malicious wounding in the June 6, 2011 knife attack in which he killed Mi Hwa Kim and severely wounded her sister, his former girlfriend Shanna Kim, in Centreville.[29][30]
- July 15 – 19-year-old Dylan S. Cooper dies at the Halquist Hospice in Arlington of electrocution injuries he sustained during the June 29 derecho.[31]
- July 17 – 64-year-old Albert C. Roeth, III is killed in Great Falls when a large oak tree falls on his 2008 Mercedes CL600 as he drives along Georgetown Pike.[32]
- July 25 – 25-year-old Alexander A. Rios fatally shoots his roommate, 43-year-old Ihab R. Qutob, then shoots and mortally wounds himself in their shared condo at 3051 D Trevor House Drive in Oakton. Rios is taken to the hospital, where he dies.[33]
- July 28 – Captain Jim Baumstark assumes command of the Fairfax County Police Department's Franconia District Station.[34]
August
- August 7 – 38-year-old Oscar Rivera is stabbed to death by his 20-year-old roommate, Jose Ivan Lopez Castro, in their shared apartment in the Providence Hall Apartments in the 9100 Block of Barrick Street in the Merrifield area.[35]
September
- September 9 – 65-year-old Billy Ray Allen is killed when he loses control of his 1994 Infiniti J30 and crosses the double yellow line into the westbound lane of Franconia Road near Norton Road, where his car crashes into a 2002 Cadillac Deville, then hits several large rocks and flips.[36]
- September 18 – 52-year-old Cheri Cusumano is killed when her 2011 Toyota Sienna goes out of control and strikes a tree, subsequently bursting into flames on Lewinsville Road in McLean.[37]
- September 23 – 57-year-old Albert M. Peterson fatally shoots his 52-year-old wife Kathleen and two sons, then commits suicide in the family home at 13391 Point Rider Lane in the Borneham Wood neighborhood of Herndon.[38]
- September 25 – Fairfax County Police Chief David M. Rohrer is appointed as a Deputy County Executive by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, assuming the public safety portfolio from Rob Stalzer.[39]
October
- October 7 – Upon returning from a shopping excursion to purchase recreational pharmaceuticals with his fiance and her 30-year-old ex-boyfriend Manuel F. Garces, 30-year-old Mark E. Ives engages in a violent disagreement with Garces, who settles the matter by stabbing Ives to death on Broadmoor street in the Hayfield Farm neighborhood of Alexandria.[40][41]
- October 16 – 68-year-old Ruth Allen is shot and mortally wounded by her 59-year-old brother, Charles A. Hamilton, at 11310 Geddys Court in Reston. Allen is taken to the Reston Hospital Center, where she dies.[42]
- October 20 – 56-year-old Magid H. Momenian unintentionally kills himself when the tree he is trying to cut down in the back yard of his house at 902 McMillen Court in Great Falls falls on him.[43]
- October 25 – 27-year-old Maximiliano Ponce-Cruz unintentionally kills himself in Annandale when he crashes into a pole on Backlick Road and is ejected from the 2003 Chevy Tahoe he is driving.[44]
- October 29 – An early morning fire kills 62-year-old Christopher Lewis in the home at 6606 Orland Street in Falls Church.[45]
November
- November 12 – 58-year-old Elizabeth P. Shattuck is killed when she is struck by a 1998 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck as she attempts to cross Columbia Pike near Ashwood Place in the Lake Barcroft area of Falls Church.[46]
- November 20 – The Fairfax County Water Authority agrees to purchase the City of Falls Church's water utility for $40 million. As part of the deal, Fairfax County will allow 42 acres of property to be annexed by the city.[47]
- November 23 – In an early morning crash, 53-year-old Clarence R. Waller unintentionally kills his 53-year-old wife Shyrel and 54-year-old sister Juanita on Interstate 66 near the ramp for the Fairfax County Parkway when he runs off the highway and strikes a tree.[48]
- November 23 – Charles C. Dudley, a 46-year-old Deputy Director for the United States Marshals Service, commits suicide by shooting himself in his house at 9691 South Run Oaks Drive in Fairfax Station.[49]
- November 27 – Dinh Quy, a 62-year-old Alexandria woman, unintentionally kills herself when she crashes her 2009 Toyota Corolla into a tree at the intersection of Rolling and Old Keene Mill Roads in Springfield.[50]
- November 30 – 32-year-old Andy Lun Yu is killed by his roommate, 34-year-old Eric C. Kweder, in their rented townhouse at 6035 Hydrangea Avenue in Alexandria.[51]
December
- December 28 - 19-year-old Zavier O. Stringfellow dies of a head injury sustained in a vehicle crash after he is stabbed by 22-year-old independent recreational agricultural products salesman Johnny E. Bonilla in Vienna.[52][53] The stabbing came about when Stringfellow and two accomplices attempted to rob Bonilla of four ounces of marijuana and Bonilla defended himself.[54] Attempting to flee the scene, Stringfellow crashed the minivan he was driving and fatally injured himself.[54]
