Springfield United Methodist Church
The Springfield United Methodist Church is in Springfield.
Sponsored by the Trinity Methodist Church of Alexandria, the church was originally established as The Methodist Church, Springfield, Va. in 1954. The Reverend George W. Harrison was appointed pastor of the church on January 15 of that year.[1][2]
Initially, church services were held in Garfield Elementary School, but by March 1954 the church had acquired a three acre lot on Old Keene Mill Road at Spring Street with the intention of building a permanent church.[2] The the first church building constructed there, containing a 400 seat auditorium, 15 classrooms, offices, utility rooms and a kitchen, was consecrated on October 17, 1955.[3]
The $376,000 construction cost of the sanctuary was partially financed by a 1959 bond drive, and the new building was consecrated on April 24, 1960.[4][5]
Following the 1968 merger of the Methodist Church with the Evangelical United Brethren Church which created the United Methodist Church, the church became known as the Springfield United Methodist Church.
