January
- January 4 – The Thomas Jefferson Library opens in a small room behind a barber shop in the Graham Road Shopping Center.
- January 9 – 34-year-old Walter S. Clark uses a borrowed shotgun to kill 25-year-old Lorraine E. Schultz and her mother, 46-year-old Edna B. Brown, at their home on Old Telegraph Road in Alexandria before he himself is shot to death by several policemen who track him to an abandoned chicken coop nearby. Clark also wounds 31-year-old Herman J. Schultz, 23-year-old William N. Brown, Jr., and Fairfax County Police Detective Dennis R. O'Neil in his spree.[1][2]
- January 10 – 55-year-old Adlai Baker dies in a fire in his two-room home in Lincolnia.[3][4]
March
- March 5 – 65-year-old George L. Seal asphyxiates himself in the driveway of his home at 212 Trammel Road in Falls Church with a hose attached to the tailpipe of his car. Seal's corpse is discovered slumped under the steering wheel at about 5:30 a.m. by his wife Ruth.[5]

- April 26 – The Martha Washington Library opens in Alexandria.[6]
June
- June 24 – The Park Avenue Methodist Church of New York City buys the Parr Franconia Warehouse in Springfield for $6,634,000.[7]
August
- August 26 – The Lee Highway Drive-In Theatre movie theater opens in Merrifield.[8]
September
- The Luther P. Jackson High School, Fairfax County's first high school for black students, opens.[9]
- September 8 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors passes an emergency ordinance compelling rabies vaccinations for all dogs in the county.[10]
October
- October 11 – After a decades-long lapse, the Fairfax County Fair opens on a 14-acre portion of the 30-acre Walnut Hill estate in Annandale.[11][12]
November
- November 20 – Henry Hill settles an argument with his 34-year-old son Coleman over the use of the elder Hill's automobile by shooting his son to death at his home in Gum Springs.[13]
December
- December 9 – Circuit Court Judge Paul E. Brown appoints Robert C. Fitzgerald as Commonwealth's Attorney, effective January 1, to replace Hugh B. Marsh.[14]
- December 9 – 32-year-old Nellie F. Otten is killed and 14-year-old Janet Coble is mortally injured in a two-car collision at the intersections of Routes 236, 50 and 211 in Fairfax. Coble is taken to the Arlington Hospital, where she dies on December 11.[15][16]
Crime
There were 31 traffic deaths in Fairfax County in 1954.[17]
