- August 28, 1956 – The Fairfax County Fair begins its 10-day run in Annandale.
- August 28, 1991 – 25-year-old Amilcar A. Menjivar is shot in the back of the neck and mortally injured during a robbery at the Wendy's at 7931 Lee Highway in Falls Church. Menjivar lingers for nearly a month before dying at the Fairfax Hospital on September 25.
- August 28, 1997 – One construction worker is killed and another mortally injured when a crane collapses at the site of the Homewood Suites hotel at 13460 Sunrise Valley Drive in Herndon. The mortally injured worker is taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he dies.
