- August 5, 1981 – 39-year-old murder suspect William B. Gates is shot to death in the parking lot of the Loyal Order of Moose lodge at 7701 Beulah Street in Alexandria when he draws a .44 magnum caliber revolver on the Fairfax County Police officers attempting to arrest him.
- August 5, 1991 – Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Chief Warren E. Isman dies of a heart attack while on a trip to England. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors names Glenn A. Gaines acting chief.
- August 5, 1997 – 33-year-old Michael K. Carter beats and mortally injures 48-year-old Francis Knapper, Jr. in the Beacon Hill area of Alexandria to settle a dispute over a $10 debt. Knapper is taken to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he dies on August 7.
