- August 4, 1948 – Fairfax County Circuit Court Judge Paul E. Brown issues an order declaring that the town of Falls Church will become a second-class city on August 16.
- August 4, 1990 – 15-year-old Rebecca L. Reese is raped and murdered in Chantilly by 21-year-old Preston C. Brown.
- August 4, 1993 – 45-year-old Theresa Thornton is stabbed to death by her ex-husband, William J. Thornton, outside her office on Pender Drive in Fairfax.
- August 4, 2005 – 24-year-old Jamel D. Rush stabs 30-year-old Christian A. Green to death near Green's home on Hagel Circle in Lorton when Green intervenes in an argument between Rush and a young woman.
