This Day In Fractured Fairfax:July 1
- July 1, 1940 – The Fairfax County Police Department becomes a separate law enforcement agency. Previously, the department had been part of the Fairfax County Sheriff's Office. The department consists of Chief Carl R. McIntosh, Detective Sergeant Henry T. Magarity, Traffic Sergeant Louis L. Finks, and Officers James Mahoney, James Dodson, and Alton Poole.
- July 1, 1955 – The new Fairfax County Police Juvenile Squad, headed by Detective David R. Eike, and Traffic Squad, headed by Lieutenant Lewis Shumate, begin operating out of the old Fairfax County Jail building. Private Eugene G. Columbus joins the new Juvenile Squad. Additionally, the Detective Bureau headed by Lieutenant Grafton L. Wells is consolidated, and Marvin Harell, Donald Hurst, and Willard Bennett are promoted to the bureau.
- July 1, 1969 – American Bar-B-Que & Catering is founded in Lorton.
- July 1, 1991 – 21-year-old Charles D. Cooper is shot to death in Annandale.
- July 1, 2007 – 17-year-old Thu-Thao Nguyen is mortally injured in Springfield when the drunken 17-year-old driver of the 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier she is riding in strikes a curb and rolls the car, ejecting them both. Nguyen is taken to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she dies.
