- March 12, 1972 – 31-year-old Dr. Milagros G. Thompson is killed during an argument with her husband, 38-year-old Edward R. Thompson, Jr., at their house at 2857 Nutley Street in Vienna.
- March 12, 1984 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors unanimously approves a new regulation that all newly hired public safety officers, including police officers, firefighters, and deputy sheriffs, must be nonsmokers and agree to remain nonsmokers throughout their employment.
