- August 3 – 18-year-old Timothy J. Koteff drowns in Lake Anne in Reston.[1][2]
- August 3 – The fifth annual Herndon 10-Mile Run inadvertently becomes the first annual Herndon Death Race when two runners, 31-year-old Patrick Reilly and 49-year-old Henry J. Kronlage, die of heat stroke suffered during the 10-mile race.[3][4]
- August 24 – 40-year-old Thomas D. Gorham fatally shoots his 26-year-old common law wife Vivian Carter at their home on Hayfield Road in Alexandria.[5]
