January
- January 1 – Frederick F. Burhans, Jr. is shot and killed and William V. Sitko is mortally wounded in a gun battle in the apartment of David W. Kaiser at 3915 Lyndhurst Drive in Fairfax. Sitko is taken to the Washington Hospital Center, where he dies of his injuries early the next morning.[1]
- January 6 – 22-year-old Thuy Le Nguyen is struck by a car and mortally injured as she crosses Route 50 near the Seven Corners Shopping Center in Falls Church. Nguyen is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where she dies on January 15.[2][3]
- January 7 – 45-year-old George E. Brown, Jr. kills himself and 28-year-old Betty B. Mixon when he crashes his car head-on into Mixon's on Richmond Highway in Lorton.[4]
- January 27 – 19-year-old Armando de Moya is killed in a single car crash when his car skids and crashes into a light pole on Lee Highway in Centreville.[5]
- January 28 – 29-year-old Barbara M. Ardis is appointed to the bench of the Fairfax County General District Court, becoming that court's first full-time female judge.[6]
- January 31 – 16-year-old Lawrence Fine is shot in the head and killed by a friend playing with a rifle in a townhouse on Headlands Circle in Reston.[7]
February
- February 21 – While turning onto Reston Avenue from Leesburg Pike in Herndon, 27-year-old Steven D. Urban is killed when his car is struck by one driven by 18-year-old Ricky L. Harlow and torn in half, hurling him nearly 100 feet into a nearby culvert.[8]
- February 26 – 72-year-old Lorenna Landes is struck and mortally injured as she crosses Heritage Drive in Annandale by a car driven by 18-year-old Elizabeth A. Thoren. Landes is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where she is pronounced dead about an hour later.[9]
March
- March 18 – Following a 45-minute argument, 19-year-old Mark A. Dennis is shot in the head and mortally wounded by 59-year-old Fred B. Harrison, Sr. at 3314 Groveton Street in the Groveton section of Alexandria. Dennis is taken to the Mount Vernon Hospital, where he dies early the next morning.[10]
April
- April 12 – An early morning house fire kills seven people in a home at 2014 Great Falls Street in McLean.[11][12]
- April 30 – 46-year-old Ralph Madden is found stabbed to death in a field at the end of Stevenson Avenue in Alexandria.[13][14]
May
- May 8 – 25-year-old John W. Tucker fatally injures 27-year-old Craig Anteroinen when he punches Anterionen in the side of the head in the parking lot of the Fairfax City Denny's for squealing on Redskins defensive end Coy Bacon, who had been arrested for being drunk at the nearby P. J. Skiddoos minutes before. Anteroinen is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he dies later that day.[15][16]
- May 9 – 27-year-old Douglas J. Kolb fatally shoots 22-year-old Robert F. Plowden during a botched robbery in Falls Church. Kolb dumps Plowden's corpse in a wooded area at the end of Evans Court, near the Idylwood Plaza shopping center.[17][18]
- May 23 – A group of men break into the minimum security Dormitory 16 at the Lorton Reformatory and fatally shoot 35-year-old prisoner Douglas M. Boney.[19][20] An intense police search follows, resulting in the arrests of 32-year-old Edward F. Sharrieff, 24-year-old Germain P. Stoddard, and 30-year-old John E. Landon.[19]
June
- June 8 – 27-year-old Jack A. Walker, Jr. is shot to death by 31-year-old Pagan's motorcycle enthusiast club member Thomas P. Evans to settle an argument at a party at 12503 Glenbrooke Woods Drive in Herndon.[21][22][23]
- June 29 – Linda Fields fatally stabs her boyfriend, Ernest Sloan, in Alexandria to settle an argument.[24]
July
- July 8 – 29-year-old John H. Wright fatally shoots 29-year-old Gary A. Cook and 54-year-old Grover C. Glass and injures 29-year-old Barbara Reese with a shotgun to settle an argument in the Nightingale Trailer Park in Alexandria.[25]
- July 9 – 12-year-old Susan Torres is fatally injured when the moped she is riding is struck by a car driven by a 17-year-old girl in Annandale. She dies of head injuries at Fairfax Hospital the following day.[26][27]
- July 14 – 28-year-old Terry G. Blackstock is shot to death in a secluded area near 11215 Gunston Road in Lorton.[28]
- July 18 – 33-year-old Amilcar Desprazeres beats his roommate, 45-year-old Antonio Flores, in the head with a pipe, fatally injuring him, in their apartment on Chain Bridge Road in Oakton. Flores is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he dies on July 23.[29]
- July 24 – 19-year-old Groveton High School dropout Robert W. Staudaher is shot and mortally wounded by Fairfax County Police Sergeant Daniel Grimes when he emerges from a second floor bedroom firing a .30 caliber rifle following a six hour standoff at the family home at 7401 Range Road in Mount Vernon. Staudaher is taken to the Mount Vernon Hospital, where he dies shortly thereafter.[30]
- July 25 – 34-year-old Richard L. Whitley strangles and cuts the throat of his neighbor, 63-year-old Phoebe Parsons, then strips her naked and sexually abuses her corpse before ransacking her home at 7718 Lisle Avenue in the Pimmit Hills neighborhood of Falls Church.[31][32]
- July 30 – Judge Barnard F. Jennings sentences William Brown, III to two life terms plus 20 years in prison for the May 26, 1979 murder of Margaret E. Goehring.[33]
August
- August 3 – 18-year-old Timothy J. Koteff drowns in Lake Anne in Reston.[34][35]
- August 3 – The fifth annual Herndon 10-Mile Run inadvertently becomes the first annual Herndon Death Race when two runners, 31-year-old Patrick Reilly and 49-year-old Henry J. Kronlage, die of heat stroke suffered during the 10-mile race.[36][37]
- August 24 – 40-year-old Thomas D. Gorham fatally shoots his 26-year-old common law wife Vivian Carter at their home on Hayfield Road in Alexandria.[38]
September
- September 5 – 30-year-old Robert W. Corbett hangs himself in his cell at the Fairfax County Jail.[39]
- September 7 – 80-year-old Bayard D. Evans, owner of the Evans Farm Inn restaurant in McLean, is killed in a car crash on Utterback Store Road in Great Falls.[40]
- September 17 – 25-year-old William N. Tumarkin and 33-year-old Marian M. Sheets are shot to death in their shared home at 3708 Rose Lane in Annandale.[41][42]
- September 17 – 44-year-old Marvin W. Humphreys fatally shoots his 42-year-old wife Lynda, then commits suicide in his home in the Lake Barcroft neighborhood of Falls Church.[41]
- September 28 – Ungrateful 35-year-old house guest Thomas M. Boyle murders 49-year-old Douglas H. Johnson with an axe at Johnson's house on Calvert Street in the Annandale Acres neighborhood of Annandale.[43][44]
October
- October 6 – 30-year-old Paul T. Hussey fatally stabs 23-year-old Valerie J. Colavolpe at their shared house on Glencourse Lane in Reston to settle an early morning dispute.[45][46]
- October 6 – 25-year-old John W. Tucker pleads guilty to involuntary manslaughter for fatally injuring 27-year-old Craig D. Anteroinen by punching him in the head in the parking lot of the Denny's restaurant in the City of Fairfax on May 8.[47]
November
- November 9 – 19-year-old Jonathan P. Reinemer fatally injures his three passengers, 18-year-olds Alana J. Klingebiel and Wallace Simpson, Jr. and 17-year-old Deborah L. Rodgers, when he drunkenly loses control of his speeding 1974 Nova and smashes into a Mazda driven by 22-year-old Lawrence O'Brien, killing O'Brien, on Annandale Road near the Walnut Hill mansion in Annandale. Klingebiel and Rodgers are taken to Fairfax Hospital, where both die on the operating table. Simpson is taken to Arlington Hospital, where he dies.[48][49][50]
- November 22 – The Fairfax County Public Library opens its 18th branch, a modular mini-library, on the lower floor of the Fair Oaks Mall.[51]
