Events that took place in Fairfax County in January, 1980:
- January 1 – Frederick F. Burhans, Jr. is shot and killed and William V. Sitko is mortally wounded in a gun battle in the apartment of David W. Kaiser at 3915 Lyndhurst Drive in Fairfax. Sitko is taken to the Washington Hospital Center, where he dies of his injuries early the next morning.[1]
- January 6 – 22-year-old Thuy Le Nguyen is struck by a car and mortally injured as she crosses Route 50 near the Seven Corners Shopping Center in Falls Church. Nguyen is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where she dies on January 15.[2][3]
- January 7 – 45-year-old George E. Brown, Jr. kills himself and 28-year-old Betty B. Mixon when he crashes his car head-on into Mixon's on Richmond Highway in Lorton.[4]
- January 27 – 19-year-old Armando de Moya is killed in a single car crash when his car skids and crashes into a light pole on Lee Highway in Centreville.[5]
- January 28 – 29-year-old Barbara M. Ardis is appointed to the bench of the Fairfax County General District Court, becoming that court's first full-time female judge.[6]
- January 31 – 16-year-old Lawrence Fine is shot in the head and killed by a friend playing with a rifle in a townhouse on Headlands Circle in Reston.[7]
