Michael A. Kane

Michael Austin "Mike" Kane was the director of the Fairfax County Park Authority from 2002 to 2007.

Kane was born in Albany, New York and went to high school in southern New Jersey. In 1974, he graduated from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina with a degree in parks, recreation and conservation administration.[1]

Unable to find a job related to his field after graduation, Kane spent a few years as a restaurant manager before being hired as the snack bar manager at the Wakefield Recreation Center in Annandale in 1978.[1]

Over the next eight years, Kane rose through various positions with FCPA: he moved to Mason District Park in his first year, and became manager of Lake Fairfax Park in 1979. In 1981, he became assistant park superintendent, and in 1986 was named assistant director.[1]

Following the retirement of Director Paul L. Baldino, Kane was named acting director of FCPA in August, 2002, and formally appointed as director in January, 2003.[2][3]

In March, 2007, Kane announced he would retire from FCPA and become director of knowledge and learning at the National Recreation and Parks Association in Ashburn.[4]

After three years at the National Recreation and Parks Association, Kane attended the Washington School of Photography in Bethesda, then left NRPA to start his own fine art photography business, Michael Austin Kane Photography.[5]
