Events that took place in Fairfax County in October, 2009:
- October 5 – 44-year-old James Griffith is struck and killed by a 1996 Toyota Corolla as he attempts to cross Richmond Highway at Backlick Road in Fort Belvoir. Griffith is taken to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, where he is pronounced dead.[1]
- October 23 – The former Edsall Park Elementary School in Springfield is dedicated as Plum Center for Lifelong Learning to honor Delegate Kenneth R. Plum.[2]
- October 23 – Ronald L. Robertson shoots Karen S. Deck in the head while attempting to unload a 9 mm pistol she had discovered in his closet. Robertson calls his mother and his friends, telling them he has accidentally shot his girlfriend, but is disbelieved. He does not call the police or the rescue squad. He calls his mother again the next day, and she notifies police, who discover Deck's corpse in Robertson's apartment.[3][4]
