Robert J. O'Neill, Jr.

Robert J. "Bob" O'Neill, Jr. was the Fairfax County Executive from 1997 to 1999.

O'Neill graduated from Old Dominion University with a bachelor's degree in politcal science in 1973, then took his master's in public administration from Syracuse University in 1974.[1]

After graduating from Syracuse, he worked as an assistant city manager in Hampton, Virginia from 1975 until 1979.[2]

From 1979 to 1981, O'Neill was a management consultant at Management Improvement Corporation of America and from 1981 to 1984 at Coopers & Lybrand. He then re-entered public service and served as the city manager of Hampton from 1984 to 1997.[1][2]

In an 8 to 1 vote, the Board of Supervisors appointed O'Neill as Fairfax County Executive on June 9, 1997, and he took over on August 4.[3][4]

O'Neill resigned on October 11, 1999, and became the president of the National Academy of Public Administration in January 2000.[5]

He would leave NAPA in November 2002 to become executive director of the International City/County Management Association, from which he retired in December 2016.

In January 2017, O'Neill joined Davenport & Company as Senior Vice President of Public Finance.
