Events that took place in Fairfax County in 2017:

January

• January 7 – Following a $7.1 million, 15-month renovation, the Pohick Regional Library in Burke reopens.^[1]
• January 8 – 15-year-old Damaris A. Reyes Rivas is stabbed to death in Springfield by 17-year-old Venus Romero Iraheta at the instigation of 17-year-old Jose Cerrato, a member of the MS-13 youth organization. Reyes Rivas was killed for her role in luring 21-year-old Christian Sosa Rivas to his murder in Prince William County the previous month.^[2]
• January 10 – 43-year-old Jose L. Merida is killed when the driver of the 1987 Chevrolet van he is riding in crashes into a tree on Centreville Road near the intersection of Bradenton Drive in Centreville.^[3]
• January 10 – 61-year-old Arsalos Cekci unintentionally kills herself when she loses control of the 2007 Toyota Camry she is driving and crashes on Trap Road in Vienna. Cekci is taken to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she is pronounced dead.^[4]
• January 16 – 32-year-old Mohammad Azim Doudzai is fatally shot by a Fairfax County police officer when he lunges at the police with a knife at his townhouse at 13316 Covered Wagon Lane in the McNair Farms neighborhood of Herndon. Doudzai had shot his two brothers, aged 37 and 23, when they attempted to mediate an argument between himself and his 28-year-old girlfriend, took his 29-year-old roommate hostage, then set the townhouse on fire before finally confronting the cops.^[5][6]
• January 26 – 21-year-old Paola Estrada Izaguirre is killed when the 18-year-old driver of the 2007 Golf she is riding in loses control of the car and crashes on Clifton Road in Fairfax Station.^[7]
• January 26 – 52-year-old Hong Chen fatally shoots his wife, 48-year-old Shirley H. Zhou, and 16-year-old son James, then commits suicide at the family home at 1339 Windy Hill Road in McLean. The corpses are discovered the next day by a family member, who calls police.^[8]

February

• February 2 – 58-year-old Waneta M. Achaj is struck and fatally injured by a 59-year-old man driving a 2002 Ford F-150 truck as she attempts to cross Little River Turnpike at the intersection with Braddock Road in Alexandria.^[9][10]
• February 11 – The remains of 15-year-old Damaris A. Reyes Rivas, who disappeared from Montgomery County, Maryland on December 10, 2016, and was murdered on January 8, are found in a wooded area off Wimsatt Road in Springfield.^[11]
• February 18 – 29-year-old David Sifuentes is killed when his 2001 Volkswagen, which he had been repairing, rolls, violently throwing him to the ground when it strikes a nearby townhouse in the London Towne West neighborhood of Centreville.^[12]
• February 21 – 4-year-old Stellan Lotuno dies in the fire he starts playing with a lighter in the garage of the home at 8113 Arcade Street in Lorton.^[13]
• February 23 – 57-year-old Asress Gobena Lakew is struck and killed by a 30-year-old driving a 2016 Jeep Wrangler as she attempts to cross Reston Parkway near South Lakes Drive in Reston.^[14]

March

• March 2 – A two-day search prompted by a tip to the Fairfax County Police Department results in the discovery of the corpses of 17-year-old Edvin Escobar Mendez and 14-year-old Sergio Arita Triminio in the Holmes Run Stream Valley Park in Alexandria.^[15][16]
• March 10 – 26-year-old Bernardo E. Ford, Jr. is convicted in federal court for killing 35-year-old independent recreational narcotics salesman Babatunde E. Fadahunsi during a botched ripoff at Fadahunsi's apartment at the Skyline Towers at 5597 Seminary Road in Baileys Crossroads on February 23, 2016.^[17]

April

• April 14 – 75-year-old Maria Ascencio is struck twice and killed by a 2016 Dodge Dart driven by 31-year-old Kenan M. Ozcan as she attempts to cross Rugby Road at Route 50 in Fairfax.^[18]
• April 14 – 50-year-old Pedro Banegas is struck and killed by the 1994 Mack dump truck he is working on in Great Falls when another man climbs in the truck and moves it.^[19]
• April 20 – 77-year-old Cong Huu Nguyen is found murdered in his apartment at the Little River Glen retirement community in Fairfax.^[20]
• April 29 – 27-year-old Enrique R. Vanterpool is shot to death to settle an argument at the TMT Auto Body shop at 5750-F General Washington Drive in the Alexandria area.^[21][22]

May

• May 2 – Fairfax County Executive Ed Long announces his intention to retire, effective September 15.^[23]

June

• June 9 – 26-year-old Bernardo E. Ford, Jr. is sentenced to 35 years in prison for killing 35-year-old Babatunde E. Fadahunsi during a botched ripoff at Fadahunsi's Baileys Crossroads apartment on February 23, 2016.^[24]
• June 11 – 53-year-old Ralph Titus fatally stabs his 47-year-old ex-wife Sabrina at her home at 113 Oak Street SW in Vienna, then goes home and shoots himself at his house at 102 Ross Drive SW. Sabrina Titus is taken to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she is pronounced dead.^[25]
• June 23 – 20-year-old Sayed Osman Sayed is fatally injured in an early morning car crash on the Fairfax County Parkway near Braddock Road in Fairfax. Sayed is taken to the hospital, where he dies.^[26]
• June 28 – 13-year-old Reyhan Safoglu is struck and killed by a Virginia Railway Express train on the bridge crossing Bull Run in Clifton. Two male relatives, aged 13 and 21, jump to the other track, but Reyhan is too afraid to jump and instead tries to outrun the train.^[27][28]
• June 30 – 29-year-old Keiron Hart is fatally stabbed by 30-year-old Jay Fasick in the alley behind Revolution Darts and Billiards in the Springfield Plaza in Springfield. Fasick flees the scene and breaks into the nearby Pet Valu store, where he is discovered and arrested.^[29][30]

July

• July 14 – 23-year-old Helen L. Hargan fatally shoots her 63-year-old mother Pamela D. Hansen Hargan, then commits suicide at her mother's house at 6708 Dean Drive in McLean.^[31]
• July 26 – 21-year-old Kelsey J. McCrimmon shoots 19-year-old Gregory Dennis and 20-year-old Ryan Cross to death in their car at the intersection of Dolsie Grove Drive and Pohick Road in Lorton.^[32]

August

• August 25 – 70-year-old James Peith drowns in Burke Lake when the canoe he is riding in capsizes. Peith's corpse is recovered over three hours later.^[33]

September

• September 16 – 26-year-old Benjamin Wenger drunkenly kills himself and his 23-year-old girlfriend Abigail Ryan when he loses control of the speeding 2018 Infiniti Q50 he is driving and crashes into a tree on Beach Mill Road in Great Falls.^[34][35]
• September 26 – 26-year-old Justin Wright is killed when he crashes his motorcycle into the rear wheels of the cab of a tractor trailer turning onto Backlick Road in Springfield.^[36][37]
• September 27 – 52-year-old John F. Wood shoots up the law office of Maddox & Gerock at 8111 Gatehouse Road in Falls Church, then commits suicide.^[38]

October

• October 9 – 52-year-old Laura L. Cornelius is fatally injured when she is struck first by a 2011 Toyota Camry and then a 2007 Dodge Caliber when she steps into the roadway of Route 1 near Hagel Circle in Lorton. Cornelius is taken to the Inova HealthPlex in Lorton, where she dies.^[39][40]
• October 10 – 81-year-old William H. Corum is killed in a head-on crash between the 1998 Ford Mustang he is driving and a 2008 Dodge Caliber in the 8400 block of Alban Road in Springfield.^[41]
• October 14 – Following a 20-month, $5.7 million renovation, the Tysons-Pimmit Regional Library reopens in Falls Church.
• October 27 – 18-year-old Robin Buritica Carvajal is mortally injured when he falls from the upper level of a six-story parking garage at the Reston Town Center in Reston. Buritica is taken to the hospital, where he is pronounced dead on October 29.^[42]
• October 28 – A twelve-year-old boy jumps from the Cedar Lane overpass onto Interstate 66 in Vienna, killing 22-year-old Marisa W. Harris when he strikes her car. The boy is taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital with severe injuries.^[43]

November

• November 1 – 70-year-old Paul E. Wedding, Jr. attacks his 76-year-old wife Gaysorn with a small axe, then commits suicide with a chainsaw in the garage of his house at 7586 Springfield Hills Drive in Springfield.^[44]
• November 4 – 38-year-old Vidal Flores Cuchillas stabs and mortally injures 27-year-old Harold Garnett in an early morning bar fight outside Velocity 5 in Centreville. Despite early expectations that he will survive, Garnett instead dies in the hospital later that evening.^[45]
• November 14 – 22-year-old Wilmer A. Sanchez Serrano is convicted of second-degree murder for his role in the killing of 15-year-old Damaris A. Reyes Rivas in Springfield on January 8.^[46]

December

• December 1 – 27-year-old Luis Ernesto Bonilla is found stabbed to death in a wooded area near the 7100 block of Fairchild Drive in Alexandria.^[47]
• December 22 – 17-year-old Nicholas Giampa fatally shoot his girlfriend's parents, 48-year-old Scott Fricker and his 43-year-old wife Buckley Kuhn Fricker in their home at 2615 Black Fir Court in Reston then shoots himself.^[48]
