- February 28, 1890 – The town of Vienna is incorporated by the Virginia General Assembly.
- February 28, 1973 – The Springfield Mall officially opens in Springfield.
- February 28, 1973 – 36-year-old Harry McMillan fatally shoots his estranged wife, 21-year-old Delores S. McMillan, 53-year-old mother-in-law Ruth M. Sherman, and 2-year-old son William, before committing suicide in his rented cabin at 8811 Lee Highway in Fairfax. William is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he dies.
- February 28, 1998 – 23-year-old Christine Allen is stabbed to death in her home in the Woodlawn area of Alexandria by her boyfriend, 26-year-old Troy A. Demar. Allen is taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she is pronounced dead.
- February 28, 2013 – While fleeing from the Fairfax County Police following a domestic dispute at his house in Fairfax, 40-year-old Cicero I. Limberea unintentionally kills himself when he runs the white SUV he is driving head-on into a police cruiser while driving the wrong way on Little River Turnpike in Annandale and the SUV bursts into flames.
